Love basa.  Purchased some from Walmart today... Delicious! However nowhere on the packaging did it say where it was from.  Reviewed other messages on line but couldn't find an answer to this .  Also saw long list of fish NOT  to eat but what fish ARE safe to buy here at Lakeside and where to purchase.  Tnx  in advance for your reply.

All basa are from Vietnam. See this thread: http://www.chapala.com/webboard/index.php?/topic/67515-basa-fish/

Maybe, AngusMactavish, and maybe not.  I'll look further.

There's a bagre farm out near La Cristina along the highway. It is a catfish. I'm not sure why we don't see that listed on menus around here. Unless, like our local berry crops they are grown for export, one would expect more local consumption, rather than importation.

Then you eat at a lot more places than I do that sell it on the menu. "Everywhere"? So good to know.

Oh, and caldo means soup or broth, so this means all caldo michi is based on bagre, right? No, I don't think so.

I don't believe you for a second, and I will check. Every known recipe in Mexico for caldo michi says "pescado" as the fish ingredient. That's it, period. Maybe some of them do use the cheapest fish they can find, which could easily be basa or bagre, but I am very intrigued by your belief that while basa is widely used as a fish dish, suddenly bagre is the only fish used in caldo michi. How did that leap happen.

I hate to disagree, but 9 out of 10 of the recipes I looked at do indeed call for bagre (catfish) "u otro pescado".  Some specify substituting huachinango for bagre, but by and large, bagre is the go-to fish for Caldo Michi.  Bagre, of course, is a naturally-occurring sweet water fish, a bottom-feeder, that is common in both Mexico and the USA.  I grew up eating catfish and love it; catfish is still fished and eaten today in many parts of central Mexico and the USA.  You can recognize it instantly by its fairly flat head, slick body, and its whiskers. Because it is and always has been so common in Jalisco, it's the fish of choice for Caldo Michi.

Don Bagre.

You are the expert, and I will always bow to your greater knowledge. So if you say so, then okay.

(edited by mod, personal insult removed)

And by the way, yesterday when I made the comment, I looked up a number of michi recipes and none of them suggested anything other than just "fish". Here are examples.

Thanks for your responses.  I take it basa really should not be on any diet here at lakeside.  But no one mentioned what fish you consider healthy here and where to buy it.

The local fish mongers sell good fresh fish from the Pacific ocean, all good!
