Robert and Gina
So what are the insanely loud birds/insects in the hills at night? Sounds like jack hammers with screeching in between! I live in Chula Vista, top of the hill.
johanson
I don't know but at first they bothered me a little and then I got used to them and don.t hear them any more. (I hear them but they don't bother me any more)
JayBearII
Those insects are called "rainbirds" here at Lake Chapala because they start their loud noise just before the rains arrive, thus "predicting" the start of the rainy season. I have been told they are a kind of cicada and the loud noise is their mating call.
ComputerGuy
There is something else at night. I've heard them. They sound monstrous. They are probably something tiny, but I'll never actually find one. They are definitely seasonal.
Glyn
We would hear birds (we thought) late at night, until we went out one night with a flashlight and found a frog that was making all the noise. This happened once the rainy season started.
ComputerGuy
Yes, another recent thread discussed these so-called "cricket frogs"... but the monstrous noise I hear is not those loud but tiny little buggars.
bmh
There are also little lizards that sometimes live in the house sometimes outside that sound like burds.. I first thought they were birds at night but no it is a lizard.
bmh
The cicadas ( rainbirds)s sing in the heat so I do not think you can hear them at night, in the evening yes but not at night.. but then they are crikets types frogs lizzards that all make sound as well..The monstrous sound I have never heard nor have I heard something that sounds like a jackhammer.. Robert and Gina
Mystery solved. The noise comes from incredibly loud frogs from the arroyo in Chula Vista Golf Club.
CHILLIN
You want loud - wait until you hear the Chachalaca bird. Never seen them here, and they are only active during day. Ear piercing racket. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egFWcCRf6SA
MtnMama
I love the sound of the frogs and toads. I just remember how many bugs they are eating.
