In Newmarket, Ontario the trash is picked up ONCE a week and there is a maximum of ONE green garbage bag per house. Biodegradables go in a pail, newspapers go in a blue box, cardboard goes in another, cans, plastic bottles and glass go in another.  That's been going on for about 10 years now.

The point being that separation of garbage would greatly improve the speed with which the trucks can pick up the "smellies"

I recall north of the border, a wonderful town, trash collection was once a week, worked just fine.

Here in Mexico because of the heat and humidity in many areas trash smells very bad in a couple of days so they collect it more often. Most people can´t afford black garbage bags is another problem. Also feral dogs and cats can get at it if left outside even in black trash bags. They know what they are doing collecting it often.

I don't have a problem with every third day, but for us in Central Ajijic, that is a big change from daily pickup (which it has been since we first came here in 2008).  WHICH days are the days for Central Ajijic (is it the same days for everyone, or different days for different streets/areas)??   As far as I can tell my neighbors (Mexican) continue to put it out daily so their community has not been advised of any change to the schedule either.

The public isn't the reason the trash isn't get picked up.  It has devolved to the point here where we can't even count on one day per week.  Yesterday's trash is all over the place in my neighborhood.

As you look at the mess, just keep remembering the recent revelation that this government has managed to increase the payroll 50 percent while failing to pick your trash up.  No amount of self serving memos from them trying to make it look like if only we followed their latest tome the problem would disappear.

No, it won't.  They are the problem, not us.

Nothing has changed around here except the trash isn't getting picked up.  People are doing the same thing they always did.  None of us have been notified our regular pickups are no longer going to happen.  At this point in time no one has a clue as to when to put the trash out with the expectation it will be picked up the same day.

We aren't mind readers.

I'll repeat--scapegoating the people for doing the same thing they've always done is a great way for the people really responsible to pretend otherwise.  Put the responsibility where it belongs.  On the failed Chapala government.

Sorry but things change and one of them is PREPACKAGED foods and plastics. If food was only purchased in a market, the way it used to be, and people only drank water out of a glass, there would be a lot less garbage and the trucks could easily pick up daily. Yes, the government is mismanaging funds but you have tunnel vision if you think that they are the whole problem and nothing but the problem. We disagree.

As it says, when the trucks get full away they go. When the shift is over away go the workers. So no telling which day nor at what time. That can work with the large bins that many cities provide. It takes away the problem of roving animals but also requires expensive trucks that can grab and dump the bins. Not practical here. People are not going to keep smelly trash in their homes for more than a day or so. If you collect people's trash in the little small bags as is the case here you have to do it daily or at worst every other day and your customers need to know at what general time. Your customers will help you if you give them consistency. It sounds like they should have sufficient pesos with the tax increases but maybe they are waiting for more foreigner donations. They seem to have learned how gullible some are. How many remember "Ajijic Limpio"? Trucks, equipment, training of workers, more equipment, more training, school classes. He put his money where his mouth was when he complained about the sorry state of Ajijic. In the end he said it was "like shoveling **** against the tide".

The piles of garbage do not change that much and as an average they know at which point they will be full so they should be able to know which day they will go by and when.. It seems that there is a total lack of coordination whithin the service and no communication with the population..

Yes separating the garbage would help at least the stinky stuff could get priority...

Sorry but nothing has changed so rapidly that all the sudden we have this problem.  The packaging has been around a LONG time.  The failure to pick up trash has not.  That happened with no warning literally overnight just this year.

They've had ample opportunity to promote recycling.  In fact we've had a number of feeble and badly thought out and managed attempts on this for several administrations.  This is the first one to fail so drastically to handle the trash.

We have packaged up our recyclables separately from the trash for years just to help the trash guys.  I encourage everyone to do this but beyond that and in the absence of effective trash management from the government, we're pretty much stuck.

I live in upper Ajijic where the trucks choose not to come. Rather we have to carry our garbage one or two blocks to the east, then one block down a street and then go around the corner and drop off the garbage. It is not a major problem to carry the garbage down to the drop off point, but I wonder whether the noise announcing that the trucks are coming will work for those of us who live so far from the drop off point.

In the other town I live in, a local business started and kids come and collect the garbage the day before or the same day depending at what time the truck goes by, yo give them a couple of pesos and the trash is taken care of. Let´s see if the local kids catch on...If they are not as poor as down south it may not become a local business, but it is down there..Probably will cost more than a couple of pesos..

Hmmm. Maybe we should plan a community "trash in" at City Hall--everyone brings a bag of garbage.

And what do the kids do with it?  Do you know where it ends up?

The kids there in San Cristobal sure seemed to have plenty of money to spend on spray paint. :)

(1) What do the people do with their trash if they are not at home during the day?

(2) The local government is well aware that the "gringo population" will come to their rescue with money and volunteers, when they really get fed up talking and complaining to no avail.

No, the only solution is if you require your life to include clean streets, no unnatural noise, no dog doodies, safe secure parking, the answer is to move to where those areas are, as soon as possible. Luckily for us at Lakeside there are a great many homes/apartments which offer these features. I do not mean just the fracs. and gated communities either.
