Real Vanilla in a bottle? WHERE?

Superlake has lots of types, most claiming to be real vanilla. It's a racket here, so check brands on line if you care a lot. I tend to buy Kirkland (which may be at Superlake) because it seems more legit.

Ask at the organic - bulk barn type store next to Gossips.  Real Vanilla is expensive.

The liquor store next to Superlake carries real vanilla as does Superlake most of the time.

We have been buying vanilla from the market in La Huerta as it is gluten free.  Unlike many of the vanilla we looked at, there are only a few ingredients and we like the flavor.

I bought a bunch at Superlake and another time from the Papantla Voladores, Papantla is where the vanilla come from and sometimes the dancers bring some with them. There was a group of them in CHapala, ask them if they can get you vanilla, their family probably grows it..

All vanilla extracts are gluten free.

POSA is the brand I've been using for about 20 years.  Unlike most of the artificial vanilla sold in Mexico, POSA is the real thing.

I was recently in Papantla and did a good deal of serious investigation into vanilla and its production.  Here is the link to an article I wrote after interviewing two producers and the president of the Consejo Estatal de Vanilla de Veracruz.  The cultivation and production of vanilla fascinated me and my companion.

I just got some good vanilla at "El Granero" next door to Gossip's. The display had bottles, two sizes I think, I got the smaller one 75 ml- it was 80 pesos.

The ingredients listed are organic vanilla, alcohol and water. There were also a few whole vanilla beans for sale within the display. The brand name is "pacqui".

The best vanilla I have used comes from Haiti, Perrier, available on Amazon. Have your favorite mule bring some down for you.  No, or very little, alcohol so you can use 1/2 the amount usually called for in a recipe.

The cost of enough vanilla beans to do it yourself would defeat the purpose.

Wouldn't it be better to support a Mexican product, one that's raised and produced here?  After all, Mexico gave vanilla to the world.  Real Mexican vanilla is excellent.

... and anyone who uses vanilla is going to be hard-pressed to tell the difference between countries of origin, so I got my bottle at SuperLake the other day to gift a friend at home. It is Monilo Real Vainilla, contains no coumarin, and is made in Guadalajara. It was about 99p for a 207ml container, but mostly, it has a pretty fancy bottle with a wooden cork, which is going to be remembered by my friend for a very, very long time.

CG, is it Monilo or Molina or Molino?  My money's on Molino...
