Home Depot returns

Does anyone know if one can return an item (still in unopened box) purchased at one branch of Home Depot in Guadalajara, to a different branch, also in Guadalajara?

I'm asking because I bought an electronic item at the Walmart in Guadalajara and tried to return it (unopened) at the local store and was refused.  Had to return it to the Guadalajara store."Policy" was the reason given.

My experience is yes, with the receipt, but they will only give you store credit and not refund cash or return to the original form of credit.

My experience at Home Depot here was that no, they made me take the item back to the location where I had purchased it. They told us the stores were individually operated.

What I would prefer is a simple exchange of the item for the same item in a different finish....which they do have in stock. So, here's hoping.  This was a "missed communication" problem.

Last time I was at Home Depot, their policy (written on a sign) was no returns or exchanges after 14 days. I tried to talk them into an exception, but no dice.

(I cannot speak to whether they accept returns at a different branch.)
