Maxillofacial surgeon : extraction w/ socket preservation

MEXLC

Please report in if you have had a socket preservation procedure.
Which area Dental (local or Guad) Maxillofacial surgeons do this?
I will be having a complex extraction done, thus the Maxillofacial
surgeon is required.
I would like to hear from those who have had an extraction,
with a bone socket preservation.
When an extraction takes place, the socket has to be preserved
(width of the bone from cheek to tongue must be preserved) so
that an implant later goes without challenges.

I presume that by "Bone socket preservation' you are not simply referring to a bone graft after an extraction... but something more complex. Many folks, who have a tooth extracted and later have an implant, do have to have a bone graft in that socket, which takes 2-3 months to 'heal' before the implant. Several 'dentists' here can do that but yours sounds like it might be a more complex than that, no?

I went through the extra step of phoning my US specialist.  I had seen so many friends have failed or faulty implants, that I wanted to do my homework on this in advance.  Most whom at problems, did not have socket preservation.  I will eventually be putting in an implant, even though the tooth is the furthest back molar.   All sources lakeside, were automatically going to do the extraction by itself.  They then would proceed to do an implant down the line, should I desire that.

Sharing what I have learned from my specialist in the states:

Socket preservation procedures help reduce horizontal or vertical alterations in the alveolar ridge near the site of a tooth extraction. This is a very simple process, best done immediately after an extraction.  My dentist in the states always does that following an extraction for in his words, when you remove a tooth it is best for the jaw bone integrity, and will make the process of getting a dental implant (at some point down the line) less complicated.  It can be is crucial to the health of the gums and remaining teeth.  He does it automatically and it is a very simple procedure, much better done at the time of the extraction.  What makes mine more complex is that I have a tough extraction.  However, I did manage to find a specialist in Guad whom states my extraction and bone socket preservation with the correct materials will be complete in approx 1/2 hour.  He said it is a very easy extraction for him.  It's worth the trip, considering that the best alternative lakeside stated it would be difficult and take approx 1 hour if not more.  I am hiring a ride to and from Guad.  My mouth and I am worth it. Like I said, I have seen friends suffer otherwise. Some of those suffering have required (over a year) of specialist visits due to repeated failing of their implant(s).

We have a friend who had an eye removed and replaced by a fake eye and it was fitted into his eye socket with all the muscles intact so the fake eye moves in concert with his other eye. Email me for more details, tomgyakima at gmail dot com.

The process you (and your specialists in the US) have described as socket preservation is or should be routinely done when extracting a tooth, especially a molar. It is also generally called a bone graft... done with several 'products' including cadaver bone or synthetic Hydroxyapatite both of which 'encourage' the existing bone to grow. In about 2 hours I will be doing that process (extraction and cadaver bone graft) here in the US. An implant will follow in a few months after healing & growth. That part may be done in Mexico.

I have inquired at a couple of well known Lakeside dentists who do implants (or have someone come down from Guadalajara to do it) and they are quite knowledgeable about the process and desirability/need to do bone grafting ESPECIALLY for an upper molar due to the fact that the sinus cavity it right above and the amount of bone ridge, after an extraction, is sometimes not sufficient for an implant (without the implant penetrating the bone and ending up 'alone and weak' in the sinus cavity.

Good luck with your procedure.

Let us know how yours turns out.

He may be able to extract the tooth in 1/2 hour but plan on being there longer than that. First he must numb up the area around the tooth and wait for it to take affect, then extract, then clean up the socket (and maybe even 'rough up' the existing bone for better adherence of the graft material), then do the bone graph and then suture it all back up. Impossible to do all that in 1/2 hour, specialist or no.

Mine went fine and so far I'm just doing ibuprophen. Hopefully it will be OK during the night but just in case I have some Vicodin.

All turned out fine, in fact it did (even with the numbing) take 30 mins.  More impressively, there wasn't any pain.  Worth the trip.  Would rather sit in the car an hour, than the chair for possibly an extra hour.  Gave me prescription for a Nsaid, which I never filled.  Instead Tylenol seems to be doing the trick.

I had braced myself for the worst, having had wisdom teeth removed when younger, in a very painful manner.  Very pleasantly surprised with this extraction.
