Mainecoons
This looks like a good rainy season and when I ride on the south east side of the lake there has been so much rain in that direction most of the area is a bog. But the lake has risen not much at all, only 0.4 meter. Wonder where all the rain went?
giltner68
According to Dr. Stong, rain contributes very little to the lake level, the majority comes from inflow and you know the story about upstream dams etc and inflow.
Mainecoons
I do, I'm just a little surprised those aren't getting full by now and more water coming into the lake.
Shira
Lirio has been flowing into the lake which means water is as well. This is early in the rainy season for this amount of river runoff. We should see a significant difference soon.
tomgates
So where is this big lirio eating machine I have read about?
giltner68
I remember a few years ago the upstream guys all hoarded the water and then we had a late rainy season and they all flooded and had to release, so what goes around comes around. Yo1
.4 of a meter is a lot of water in a 50 X 11 miles long lake.

Maybe you are thinking about these vegetarian Piranha fish, starting to show up in many areas of the U.S.A., the urban legend is that they also have a taste for testicles. lcscats
Yes lirio means someone opened up a dam usually. As far as the veggie piranha I doubt/hope that they will survive the winter up north.
tomgates
No Chillin. Last year in the GR a story about a big machine to chew it up.
geeser
The problem with chopping up Lirio is that each small piece will grow another plant, just like the monster it is. Actually the spraying several years ago with the Glyphosate was most effective. It has to be applied these days by a trained technician, last time they used an airboat. The horrible things many readers claimed would be caused by spraying never occured. It was sprayed directly on the patches of Lirio and not Lake wide. There is a resivor on east side of Guadalajara before you get to Lagos de Moreno on the south side of the toll road. We have watched for years as It got infested with the nasty green weeds in small patches. Then there appeared a boat machine to chop and lift it out of the water. Then over the years it has gotten more and more covered with lirio. Now it is so thick that the machine can make no difference and no headway at all. I am sure many who drive north to Laredo know this small lake and it's situtation..
giltner68
Lake Austin up here has problems with it and every few years they lower the lake level in Jan/Feb and pray for a freeze. But the most effective method has been to release sterile carp and they eat it like crazy.
