CHILLIN
Has anybody spotted (or smelled - pew!) fresh Jackfruit in the markets? Named "Jaca" in Mexico. I read this interesting piece about it, and have had Jamaican Akee before. This would seem to be a good substitute for chicken or pork. I would like to try and grow a tree, I think the birds would leave this tough skinned fruit alone. Green Mango and green Papaya are also tasty when shredded into a mild coleslaw or salad ttps://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/read-this-before-you-lug-home-that-jackfruit/2016/06/06/7d45b17e-282f-11e6-b989-4e5479715b54_story.html
pappysmarket
My wife served 2 years in the Peace Corps in the Philippines where durians are plentiful and despised. Back then, she says they were forbidden to be brought on a bus because they smell like s--t.
FlyFree
Durians are an acquired taste. If only we could get them here in Ajijic.
CHILLIN
I found them in Cihuatlan they have 6 hectares in trees. Anybody traveling to Manzanillo soon? You would do well transporting the Jackfruit back to Chapala - if you get pulled over by police, soon as you open your window, they are likely to take one sniff, and wave you on your way! Or check to see if you have a dead body in the trunk. I think it is just the latex sap which gives off the smell https://translate.google.com.mx/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://www.economiahoy.mx/ciencia-eAm-mx/noticias/7133734/11/15/Frutas-raras-de-Mexico-La-Jaca.html&prev=search Now to find salt cod, bacalla. Most of used to come from Canada. Harry Belafonte's favorite food - ackee and saltfish, made famous in this golden oldie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvnjRbw7O0g
Yo1
Jackfruit and Duriuan are not the same; not even close: Jackfruit emits a strong, bubble-gum odor that has been likened to a combination of rotten-onions, bananas, and pineapple. That’s a big step up from durian’s sweaty socks sitting in sewer water near a fishery. The taste of jackfruit is also typically more readily acceptable to western palates. It’s unclear if this is because of the flavor inherent to jackfruit, or because it resembles flavors already familiar to westerners like bananas and pineapples. Internet hearsay suggests that Wrigley’s juicy fruit gum may have been inspired by the jackfruit. Now why is there no durian gum? (oh wait, there is) This is from a quite interesting website: http://www.yearofthedurian.com/2013/01/jackfruit-is-not-durian.html
More Liana
Jackfruit (actually spelled YACA in Spanish) is usually available at the Wednesday/Friday/Sunday Tianguis del Sol in Guadalajara. The vendors cut it into small-ish sections rather than selling you the whole fruit, which is huge. And Yo1 is correct, the yaca is nothing like the durian. I've never seen (or smelled) a durian in Mexico.Yaca grows on Mexico's Pacific Coast.
rckrckr
Yaca is usually sold at most of the roadside fruit stands between Manzanillo and Barra.
Travis
Great photo. They are so ridiculous looking. Available all up and down the coast of Nayarit, also.

It is a traditional Mexican Christmas dish. Sometimes the Pacifico del Sur will have it im west Ajijic.
More Liana
Salt cod in Spanish is bacalao. Almost all of this dried fish sold in Mexico is from Norway.
