mexbound
I was wondering if anyone locally here in Ajijic has used "UPS Worldwide Saver" shipping from USA to your door in Ajijic. Did the process go smooth? Any customs/duty issues? At time of shipping I have the option of using "DHL Express" shipping. Would DHL be a better option? jrm30655
I've used both with good results. I ship to Sol y Luna so I don't have to be home to recieve the packages.

mexbound
Thanks for the info. If you have it shipped direct to your door, how do you pay the 16% duties incurred? Do you pay the driver in cash?
ibarra
We normally use UPS. On their web site, tracking option, we have been able to view the amount owed for import fees. Yes, you pay the driver. We pay in pesos, haven't asked if credit card is an issue.
mexbound
Thanks Ibarra for the duty info. I'm curious, do the UPS trucks look like they do in the US? Dark chocolate brown color?
El Cartero
For some unkown or 'just plain luck' reason, have never incurred a tax fee. Have. Never had anything brought in over 200 usd if that's the least bit relative.
ibarra
UPS uses dark brown small van type vehicles.
Mostlylost
Estafeta, which is a Mexican company, has a program where they give you an address address in the USA. They receive the package, pass it through customs, pay any duty and ship to you in Mexico. Everything is charged to your credit card. The service is Merkalink. Have used for everything from fireplace insert to computer, with no problem.

Most items made in USA or Canada are duty exempt. (NAFTA).
mexbound
Thanks Dave0415. I didn't know it was VAT. Always thought 16% was duty.
Mostlylost
Just as in other countries there can be a duty on imports. Sales tax is a totally different thing. Actually for an item imported to Mexico it is duty which is charged by Aduana, a very different department of the government than the Hacienda which administers facturas and VAT. Duty is not always 16% but can vary depending on the type of item, and country of manufacture. Items under $50 US do not incur duty. If it was vat there would be a 16% charge no matter what the cost. Clothes can be taxed up to 100% If it is to be resold then there is a 16% VAT on the sale. NAFTA does not include purchases by individuals. It is for trade by companies. If it covered individuals there would be no limit on the dollar amount of import at the airport or border.
