Opinions regarding insurance

Recommended Posts

I've been here almost two years. I'm 68, good health, workout a lot, play golf, clean recent physical. I've had Best Doctors since I've been here, but anything I've neede d medically so far I've paid out of pocket. Of course, I have Medicare. I've spoken with a few folks lately who have Seguro Popular and were pleased with it. I'm considering letting my Best DR's expire and using Seguro while here, until I could get back to the states for anything major. Anyone have thoughts about this? Thanks

Sounds like you are expecting " anything major" to give you plenty of advance notice so that you can pack, make flight reservations, get to and from the airport, hospital, etc. In the States. What if you have an emergency? Seguro Popular or Best Doctors? Or just Seguro Popular? Hmmm.

For about the same cost as Medicare part B, you can keep your Best Doctors or switch to WEA, which is better coverage, and have your medical bills paid 100%.  Medicare pays only 80% of their ALLOWABLE, which is not even close to 80% of the total bill.  Good luck finding a doctor to take a new Medicare patient.  For me, I'd rather have care here in Mexico, where the specialists are topnotch, than depend on getting to the US in time for a sudden emergency.  Pencil out the costs, including transport to the US, and I think you will find that having insurance here, even with a deductible of $3500US, is cheaper and much more convenient.

I would suggest that if the OP is determined to go to the U.S. for major medical care, he should look into buying a policy from one of those companies which will fly you there. They advertise heavily in the various local publications.  I think there are at least three.

Note that the patient must be "stabilized" here before they'll take you aboard for your flight.

Well Al Berca your reply is worthless thanks.

As a matter of fact all I was asking was had anyone had experience with Seguro Popular.

I know about flight costs thanks.

I know about Medicare in the states and what it covers thanks.

I know about WEA thanks

Good to know I am not alone. LOL!

You will learn that asking a question does not require giving all of the background and rationale for asking it if you don't want those things taken into consideration by responders, who, believe it if not, were actually trying to help you!

Another option would be to follow your post more closely so that if it is going off track, you can comment and bring it back on course, rather than posting, coming back nine hours later and being upset at the responses.

Not upset at the responses. Fortunately, I don't get annoyed by much these days, especially on a webboard.. Just didn't get an answer to my very simple question, although some did take the time to make a reply that wasn't sarcastic and smug and I appreciate that.

I realize that some folks appear to spend a lot of time posting here and if that is there life ok by me. I have seen enough of this board in 31/2 years to know that the replies will be a mixed bag.

You got our thoughts to your question.  I don't see that you were asking if anyone had experience with SP.

O.K. Elevator - I'll give you your "happy ending". My GP, who is well overqualified as such, is also an ER doctor at the large Seguro Hospital in Guadalajara. She has told me the Seguro Popular is a mine field of "small print". She runs across ER patients requiring multiple treatments, but the office often approves one procedure but not another. She also said the Jocotopec facility is not a full hospital. Thank goodness she soldiers through this, and is one of those few doctors who we are truly blessed that she chose to join that profession. That is what is most important. Here's a clue - if your doctor has a credit card imprint machine as a belt buckle - run, hide!

I tried to use the "search function" for thread titles in the past including the words "seguro popular" but got an error message.

Here is a suggestion:  Before you drop the insurance you have, go to either the Jocotepic new (limited service) hospital or to the main hospital in Guadalajara and see what it looks like. Decide if you want to receive medical care there.  If not, that will answer your question.  If that looks good to you, proceed on that path.

Personally, my husband and I decided years ago to drop our Part B Medicare insurance.  As a result, I have a large "medical savings account" available and have been way ahead by paying out of pocket for two healthy elders.  Haven't needed hospitalization but would prefer a private one.  However, we signed up with IMSS as a backup in the case of a serious, long term hospitalization need.  Since we've been out of touch with the U.S. for over a dozen years, we aren't considering returning there for medical care.

I hope this information contributes to the answers you seek.  Perhaps you would have better luck in using the "search" function.  There have been many threads on the subject in the past.

Thanks to all who replied.

Yo1, asking about SP was exactly what I did and some folks responded about their knowledge of SP.

It appears to be a mixed bag, as just about everything else in life. All I want is medical care for an emergency until I could return to the states. Although some folks, not on the board, have used SP for quite a while and feel it is very good.

FYI, I found a great 3 part article by Weley Fink about SP. He recommends it.
