Mainecoons
We have red canterra stone coping on our pool. It is only a few years old but is showing some problems. some of the stones will need to be replaced. The joints were cut too small and grout won't stay in them. It needs to be resurfaced and sealed with some sort of an oil or silicone based sealer. I don't want to call back the guy who did the original work because he's the one who screwed up. Suggestions? Gracias!
CHILLIN
That's a big problem MC. Cantera stone is quite porous, weak and often has a lot of flaws. You are right to have it sealed with siloxathane sealers every two or three years. They don't get glossy like most of the acrylic sealers. The easiest way maybe to clear, and widen, the grout joints with a dry blade diamond saw, compressed air to clean them out, then regrout with an epoxy based grout. Either way, it is going to be dusty and noisy right in your prime swimming pool season. There is a diamond masonry saw with a special vacuum attached, but I doubt if anyone here is using them. IMHO this is professional job, which requires special equipment, and special chemicals - looks like Guadalajara. It would be a shame to cover that beautiful stone with paint or concrete skim coat. You might contact an Architect who has specialized in building restoration, they could possible recommend a mason.
mudgirl
They probably used unsanded grout, or white cement, if you have it redone with sanded, you probably don't need to widen the joints.
