Cataract Surgery and Allianz Ins. Co.

There have been discussions recently on this forum regarding cataract surgery and Allianz Insurance Co. as that insurance company relates to payment of eye surgeries.  There have also been discussions regarding a certain surgeon in this area whose work has been less than stellar in several instances.  The following is my experience:

My choice of surgeons:  Dra. Elizabeth Rodriguez Mendez, Tarascos #3439 Suite 101, Fracc. Monraz, Guadalajara; telephone: (33) 3813 5088 and cell 044 33 1124 4813

Dra. Rodriguez operated on my husband's macular fold and cataract about 3 years ago and the result could not be better.  She operated on my left eye on the 8th of this month and the right eye on the 15th.  The results, again, could not be better even as I am still healing.  She is highly qualified and very careful.  (For instance, you will not have to worry about her putting in the wrong lens; or, in doing so taking it out the next day when your eye is the most vulnerable; or, telling you that you have cataracts that need surgery when, in fact, you don't have cataracts at all; or, getting your file mixed up with another person's file and ordering surgery that is then caught as not necessary by the insurance company; etc. etc.)

If you are needing cataract surgery, please Google "laser systems for cataract surgery" and read about laser assisted cataract surgery.  Know that all specialists do not use the laser system and also know that the laser system that is used in cataract surgery is not the same as laser surgery for sight correction.  There are only 2 laser systems for cataract surgery available in Guadalajara, one is located in Puerto de Hierro Hospital and the other is at Clinica Santa Lucia.  If you are not having your surgery at one of these two places, then your surgeon is not using the assisted laser system that can give you a much better result vs. manuel cuts by the surgeon.

As to the discussion regarding Allianz recently.  It is my understanding that you need to read your policy and know what you are purchasing and under what terms.  Our particular Allianz policy required 1 deductible only for 2 eyes.  It considered both eyes as one organ ... thus only one deductible.

If anyone has any questions regarding my experience with this surgery or anything related to it, I will be glad to answer the best I can.

Ajijicbound, I don't know if Allianz is still offered here ... I just know that we still have it.  Anyone interested could contact Alicia or Rossana at Isaac Seguros y Fianzas; 766-5974 Monday through Friday, I think about 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.  They are our agents and they are excellent.

Carollopezart, I can not help with the cost of the surgery as we only paid our deductible.  However, the doctor would be able to quote you the price.  As to the lens ... yes, I have the tri-focal lens.  I do not have to wear glasses for anything ... reading, computer, or far vision.  Results vary, however, depending on the condition of your eyes prior to surgery.  This also should be discussed with your surgeon.  Dr. Rodriguez told me prior to surgery that she thought I would have at least 20/40 vision ... I wound up with 20/30 at the last check up.  I believe my eyes have gotten even better (it takes a while for them to heal completely) but I will not know that for sure until my next visit in July.  Dr. Rodriguez speaks excellent English and can answer all your questions.  She will advise if she thinks you are a candidate for tri-focals and if you are not she will explain why.

Oh, one more thing Carollopezart ... it isn't the clinic that orders or "provides" the lens ... it is the doctor's responsibility to have your eyes measured and order the correct lens for your surgery.  It is the doctor's responsibility to check and make sure the correct lens has been received and is the correct lens being placed in your eye.  At least, that is the way it worked in my case.

The agency mentioned above, Isaac seguros represents Allianz , as does Parker insurance in Riberas. I'm sure that there are others as well as offices inGuadalajara. Some of the larger hospitals such as Del Carmen also have Allianz and other insurance companies offices in the hospital.h
