thevalerieleigh
I've been reading many articles lately talking about the wonderful health properties of turmeric and ginger root. I can find ginger easily but don't know where or if I can find turmeric locally. I'm looking for the actual root, not the powder. Has anyone been able to locate it here? If so, please share the info. Many thanks, Valerie
FlyFree
Walmart has it from time to time. It had some yesterday in the refrigerated area where they keep their fresh vegetables.
thevalerieleigh
Great, thanks, I'll check for it today! Is it called Turmeric in Spanish as well? Valerie
FlyFree
I don't know what it's called in Spanish. I recognize the product. It looks like ginger root but is orange in color.
Glyn
Val, sometimes the grain shop next to Gossips has it also.
Kyle
How do you use it?
FlyFree
I use it when making Indian curries. If the fresh is not available, I use the powdered form, which is available at Superlake in the dry spice section.
CHILLIN
I think Curcuma, as well as another exotic Asian root, Galanga, are often sold in the big public markets as medicine ingredients rather than flavoring or spices. Not much call for traditional herbal medicines among gringos, but definitely in Guadalajara and the countryside. Luc in Puerto Vallarta is/was growing both, if you can buy some root chunks, and then grow your own. Unfortunately, he cannot ship, even within Jalisco. Ask around Tuesday market, maybe someone has seen it in Guadalajara and will bring you back some. Grow your own Food, Grow your own Medicine!
