Is there a different rate for employees as I paid over 7,000 pesos for my maids coverage.

Employers pay employee´s medical coverage for their family plus a percentage of the employee´s salary into the IMSS pension plan so it is actually 2 parts for your payments with your account for the maid.

IMSS is much more than Seguro Popular. SP cost is per family be 1 or 5 and coverage is 100% immediately with paying for 3 years being an option..

And from your experience/knowledge of the 2, is there a lot of difference in the quality of care/service provided by the 2?

My wife and I have ISSSTE medical but have some doctor friends and her family working as specialists in the IMSS and the Seguro Popular. They also have private practices and some have doctor friends working in the IMSS, Seguro Popular and ISSSTE. My wife retired as a top administrator of our state for the Secretaria de Salud for the Seguro Popular and has/had many doctor friends working there and with private practices, some retired now. The internship for several years after graduation from any state medical university is with Seguro Popular, IMSS or ISSSTE hospitals so most doctors are familiar with these systems and their doctor or administrator friends work or worked at one of them.

From what I have seen so far is most of the best specialists work at one of the 3 at least for 4 or 5 years and some still work at one of these 5 hours per day and 5 hours per day at their private practises.

The odds are good if you need regular care you will be well taken care of depending on the location. The odds also are good you will be well taken care of in a complicated speciality at any of the 3 depending on location.

Equipment and facilities have been greatly upgraded at many hospitals and speciality clinics in the last 10 years which helps those that do work there.

It would be hard to compare the 3 systems now but was easier 10 years ago before much more money was invested in them.

IMSS may find reasons to deny you after making you pay and apply and even then having restrictions the first 3 years, SP approval and free policy the first 3 years and so far nobody denied.

Anyone know how regular supply of prescription meds compares in the two systems? We have IMSS now, up to renew (pay in August) and the new rates are getting right up there....... but not sure I'm ready to switch without confidence in supply after many years of good service with IMSS.

Also, what about lab tests, ultrasounds, MRI's, CAT scans, etc.? I think they do them in new hospital in Joco, but??

Already posted this query but no response. Hope I do better this time.

Am wondering how reliable Seguro Popular is for regular supply of prescribed drugs. Also, for those living Lakeside, how are normal appointments handled?  (Wondering if change from IMSS a good idea or not.....)

First off, many people (and there aren't that many on either system using this board) don't or haven't used both, so I wouldn't expect much of an answer. Your best bet would to take what you've learned from IMSS and go to a Seguro Popular in either Chapala or the newer one out by Joco and check yourself. And we'd be interested in seeing your results.

We have decided to stay with IMSS since we have had it for 9 years, we have always been taken care of even had surgery at #180. We thought about changing to SP since friends have switched over but haven't heard the greatest of stories. Dr.'s in Chapala don't like the gringos they are out of meds all the time. We think we will stay put, even with the price increases. We are established already and go to our monthly appts.

Took a Mexican lady to have her cats vaccinated for rabies to the SP in San Antonio today (yeah ---- go figure) so asked the nurse about the system. She admitted they have a shorter list of drugs than IMSS, they DO NOT offer prior appts. unless you are on the "family" plan, right now they are short of doctors for "consultas" anyway, (only in San Antonio??) and that means 7 am line-up to see if you can see a doctor today.......

That was enough for me to decide to stay put (this will be year 18) with IMSS even if Tlajolmulco IS a pain to get to/from!

Also know the system and the methods at IMSS, so will swallow the big pill.

SUPPOSE (???) that in event of emergency, according to Guad Reporter and Informador recently, an IMSS patient could show up at the new Joco hospital and get help.

I had Seguro Popular for 4 years before I was able to obtain private insurance (problem due to a pre-existing condition).  I used it for free mammograms, flu vaccine and half off my CAT scans.  I got some prescriptions through them but in reality the SP pharmacy was out of a lot of things, every time I went.  I always had to go early (7 or 8 am) and get a number to save my place in line, before I could get in to make an appointment to see a doctor.  Consequently, I almost never saw one of their doctors, I had my own private practitioner.

I just heard -- second-hand -- of a friend of a friend who was covered under Seguro Popular and who needed immediate open heart surgery.  Seguro Popular told him that they couldn't take him right away, he'd have to wait for a month, so he ended up going into the hospital that day and having to pay for the entire surgery out of pocket.
