Colonoscopy

Prices vary greatly depending on :

1. Place (Hospital vs. "Clinic") - San Javier ( 10,000 Pesos for OR/Hospital vs. San Pio/Clinica del Pilar 5,0000 pesos)

2. Who does it - Gastroenterologist and Anesthetist. The younger and less experienced tend to be less expensive

Dr. Male, who has a lot of work and very well known ($18,000 for his services) vs. Dr. Olvera, whom I work with (5,000 approx) plus anesthetist fees (3,000 approx.)

3. Biopsy - The number of Biopsies done (if needed) and the cost of the.....

4. Pathology report - The pathologists fees are usually not included as part of the procedure. Each pathologist charges different rates depending on the specimen. (usually about $1,500 pesos per specimen)

So, it can be as low as $8-9 thousand pesos and can be as high as $22-25 thousand pesos in a fully equipped hospital (such as San Javier) done by a doctor with a solid rep and >20 years experience such as Dr. Rene Male Velasquez.

Sorry if this is too vague but you can discuss them with your referring doctor.

I don't recommend that they be done at any Clinic Lakeside. There is always the risk of a perforation during such a procedure.

Dr. Leon has a specialist come in to his office and does the proceedures there - my hubby has had the proceedure done and it was fine.

my husband also saw the specialist that comes to Dr Leons office it was very easy and very professional.. Don't remember cost but I know we considered it very reasonable. and I think he got the drink stuff from Guadalajara Pharmacy.

UdeG Med School. Cost was $4500 Dr. was one of Dr. Juan Pablo's teachers. Dr. JP is my doc. Talk to him if you don't have a recommendation from your local Doctor. I don't recall the name of the stuff but I got it at Farmacia Guadalajara. Whoever you chose will tell you what to get.

I had a colonoscopy done with an endoscopy prior to other surgery. Small rinky dink hospital in downtown Guad. Got a sort of package deal they wanted 5,000 pesos each procedure, think I got both for $9,000 including anesthesiologist and then an extra $1,000 to send samples to lab for testing.

I was rocket man the night before drinking a salty cherry potion, next day I got an injection, woke up and all was done and got a dvd of the procedure an then off to the operating room for other stuff.

This was my Christmas vacation.

I would not consider any place except a Hospital. There is a possibility of puncturing , and bleeding.

Then if not I a hospital , you are in danger..

I had one at Hospital Bernadette in 2012, (many more before in prior yrs)

Dr Jose de Jesus Garcia Correa, 333.825.2480, 825.5630, 825.2741, cell 333.137.2002

included biopsies, anesthesia, video, and the price (including hospital) was much less than is being quoted here.

2 bottles of Fleet Fosfosoda lima flavor.. or Nuniteli Dr will prescribe.

Dr. Hector A. Valenzuela Alpuche

General Surgery; Surgery Gastroenterology; Minimally Invasive Surgery

Plaza Interlago

Libramiento Chapala Ajijic

Tel. (376)766-1870

Will set you up with the hospital and a very good Gastroenterologist in Guadalajara. This way, if there is something that needs attention right away you will also have interviewed and know your surgeon. He is absolutely excellent.

My 2 cents:

Based on 21 years of living in GDL and having many adventures requiring hospitalization all I can say is Definitely get a referral from a trusted doctor, and do NOT have it done in a rinky dink local clinic. There is just too much that can go wrong that no amount of good intentions or misplaced loyalties can handle Lakeside, especially if someone says "oops" during the procedure.

That said some of the skuttle butt I have gathered from direct experience and from the experiences of friends on GDL hospitals include: San Javier is fine and will get the job done right but is very expensive and has the reputation of a surgery mill. Once they have you, you will require surgery, whether you need it or not. Sort of a Hotel California vibe there.

Puerto de Hierro, the one by Andares has some good doctors and good reputation as does Real San Jose and Hospital Angeles del Carmen. The later being my top pick and go to hospital for everything now. That said it is still buyer beware as unnecessary surgery is rampant everywhere. That problem is easily solved by getting alternate opinions. If you have a good insurance policy ask your insurance company to refer you to a doctor who they have vetted and is covered by your plan. I had a very high quality colonoscopy after my AXA approved Del Carmen doctor referred me to the following for the actual procedure:

Jardines Hospital De Especialidades, S.A de C.V.
Address: Av Manuel J. Clouthier 669, 45030 Zapopan, Jal.
Phone:01 33 3620 1002

Google them if you want more info

Hope this is of some help

Something to keep in mind - if something goes wrong at a local clinic, you are at the mercy of having only one ambulance service in town. Now, I have heard nothing at all negative about the EMTs and transport services (not an issue I have researched). However, the one time I was in severe medical distress that was caused 100% by the doctor, while he treated me in his office, I was repeatedly refused an ambulance and transport to an ER, because (I personally believe) the doctor in question realized he made a terrible error and did not wish for it to get out in this small town, and although he knew I would endure about 8 hours of the worst suffering and terror I've ever known, he did not believe I would get "hurt" or die.

Big gamble on his part, and the terror of being totally at his mercy and his refusal to call an ambulance despite my absolute conviction that I was GOING to die of a heart attack, agonizing pain, hallucinations, racing heart like I have never known, sweating in puddles, uncontrolled head slamming into the ground, begging for help, sobbing, fainting, seizing, uncontrolled screaming, etc. (ie: I was hardly being "dramatic"), and as I was in no condition to call an ambulance myself, made for an unforgettable life experience that I wish I could forget. Obviously, I lived, but with a lot of bruising on my head and hands and a level of trauma that will take a long time to go away. What was particularly upsetting was this doctor also knew (once he realized his mistake, per Google) that with that drug combo the patient 100% believes they are in the throes of a terrible death, but did absolutely zero to assure me I would not die. His nurse did hold my hands a few times. She did the best she could under circumstances that must've been tough for her.

Had I been transported, I could've been sedated and made much more comfortable (8 hours on a cold tile floor sucked) until the "bad" medicine left my system.

As others have said, you want to be close to an ER that can take care of you in case something does go wrong.
