Water lettuce taking over lake Chapala.

Water lettuce is a very aggressive invader and can form thick floating mats. If these mats cover the entire surface of the lake they can cause oxygen depletions and fish kills. Water lettuce should be controlled so they do not cover the entire lake.

Much like water hyacinth, water lettuce starts out slow -- particularly during cool spring days. Warm sun makes it grow like gangbusters.

some photos i took on the lake today

Don't you read the Guadalajara Reporter? They are going to start taking care of it.

Interesting about water lettuce. I thought the green plants on the surface of the lake were lirio (water hyacinths) but upon inspection it was mostly water lettuce mixed with many less lirio plants- in Ajijic anyway.
