CalGal
Be aware that they are widening the highway on the south side of the lake, starting about 8 miles before the Mazamitla turnoff. It's a mess, and you may have to make several stops to let the oncoming traffic through. My car was covered with red dirt when we got home. dave0415
Construction on that road has been ongoing for the last 2-3 years and will probably continue for another few years.
Al Berca
And well worth the wait, stops and red dirt on car. The finished section of the highway is fantastic and so much safer.
Mainecoons
It is but unfortunately all these new sections of road do is funnel a lot of heavy traffic into and through San Luis Soyutlan which has to be pretty miserable for the folks that live and work there. Seems like getting the cart before the horse. The bypass to relieve this situation should have been built first IMO. They did the same thing to El Molino. Al Berca
Might want to add Ajijic to the list. Same problem. Probably worse. No fix in sight and no end to continuous increases in traffic congestion in sight. The only thing we do not have, thank god, is the heavy truck traffic of the others. xtrailer
We took a day trip to Mazamitla yesterday and the road work doesn't seem to have advanced much in the past few weeks. There are a number of spots where the surface material goes from pavement to gravel to dirt, and vice versa. I'd recommend driving slow and steady during daylight hours, and be aware of any large vehicles in oncoming traffic (had to pull over in a few sections to let buses come through). That being said, the road has been under construction for years now and its not any worse than it was during construction on previous sections. Keep your windows rolled up if you don't want to get covered in red dust!
