palmajeank
We will be crossing in Nogales. Do you purchase the TIP as you show your passport or is there another line you must drive to? Is it obviously marked?
snowyco
You go to the Banjercito office. These instructions worked in the past. Crossing at Nogales: 1. Use the Mariposa crossing, Highway 189, exit 4 from I-19. 2. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right on Highway 189 (south) and proceed about 3 miles to the American check point at the border. 3. After this checkpoint, you will cross the border and proceed in the left lane to the Mexican tollbooth on Mexican Highway 15, (pay with pesos only). 4. After to the tollbooth, proceed in the left lane a short distance to the Aduana checkpoint ... typically take the ‘Nothing to Declare” lane. 5. Proceed to the Kilometer 21 checkpoint (about 12 miles south) for your visa and vehicle permit. Watch for the signs as you pull over into the parking area on the right. 6. Proceed to the immigration office on the north side of the complex to get your INM visa. If you didn’t bring copies of your documents, a copy booth is available for both INM and Aduana/Banjecito TIP documents (car registration, passport, etc). 7. Proceed to the Banjercito (Bank of the Army) offices on the south side of the complex to get your vehicle permit. This is a long building with several teller-like windows facing you, as you walk toward the building. Nov. 2015"Banjercito Sucursales: Sonora:Km. 21 Nogales ... Gerente de Módulo 01 631... RickS
Another option, if you have a few days yet, is to get the TIP online. It is delivered to your US door "within 2 days". Then at the border all ones needs to do is get a tourist card.
palmajeank
I thought about getting it online but it seemed a hassle too and then if we need tourist cards we have to stop anyway. Do you get the tourist cards at the same place. Another thing. I saw on a website was that it was at the border not at the 21 km checkpoint. It's confusing. thanks to both of you. Obviously I need help!

They want to register your entrance date and therefore your exit date there in their system. Not as easy as just driving on in and getting a FMM card. You also need to apply on line at the INM webpage given on the Banjercito site for a preapproved FMM 180 day tourist card and print out the form and give it to INM entering Mexico and pay for and recieve the FMM first to continue with the on line TIP application. If you read clause 8.4 carefully you will recognize that it refers to vehicles LEAVING the county ("return to their country of origin") not entering the country. If you have your on-line TIP there is no requirement to check-in with Banjercito when you enter the country. As for the pre-approved FMM, INM officials have always ignored the form and simply had us fill out FMM cards, so we stopped bothering to present it. Islander
PalmaJean, Snowyco description is pretty accurate except #4 When going through the Aduana's "nothing to declare" lane you will have either green or red light to go through. If green, you just continue driving but if red they will check your car. Same principle as at the airport. I would get the TIP on line. We always do. As Rick says it arrives in couple of days and you just fill the visa card at km21, pay for it and you are on your way in 15 minutes. It beats to stand there in the cold (usually). You do not show your passport as you cross the border...everything is done at km21. If you do not have any pesos at that point, you may want to change some money there too (at not so good rate) You will need pesos for gas and tolls, at least for the first day.....depending where you will stop for night to get another batch with better rate. Safe travels.
