Morelia, Patzquaro and Michoacan...

Just came back from a four day trip there and have to say Michoacán is truly a beautiful state. The cuotas on the way were like driving on the best highways in the states. The roads and sidewalks in all the cities were so much better than we have around here. Visited several smaller towns where they made copper products, porcelain, fabrics etc. Prices were incredible.

Several local Mexicans told us to be very careful as it was dangerous. We never heard about or saw the slightest problem, of course that doesn't mean things don't happen. Every gringo we spoke with said they have no problems or concerns living there other than you would anyplace else.

We'll be going back for sure.

Theory:

Tapatio tourists bring a lot of money to Lakeside, along with appetites for fast food and drink, with few receptacles on the street in which to deposit the left-overs and wrappeers, etc.

The local politicos are limited to three year terms, which is a very short time to get very very rich and retire elsewhere.

Sidewalks are a separate issue, as they are the responsibility of the homeowner, not the municipality.

I just don't see why Lakeside ends up with awful sidewalks and roadways, and trash all over the place, when just about every other city or area I have visited in Mexico is so much nicer...

I agree with your observations, given the taxes available from all the Fracc's and business owners, etc something is amiss with the quality of our administration when it comes to road maintenance Lakeside etc. Time to stop making excuses and fix the problem

I'd agree when it comes to the visible manifestation of services, street repair and cleaning, this area really comes up short in comparison to the places I visited in Michoacan.

Frankly, though, I've ridden my moto through quite a number of Jalisco towns that put this one to shame in maintenance and sanitation as well. The poor Jalisco state roads are a state problem but the lack of sanitation and street repair here is purely local.

Our municipio's only distinction seems to be that it is one of the 11 most debt laden in the state, despite having a rich tax base. I agree it is time to stop making excuses for it and pretending it is OK. All the other places are on the same election cycle but they seem to deliver the services regardless.

It's too bad there's apparently no real mechanism here for a higher level of government to take over and straighten out failing and corrupt municipios. Because it appears to me that is the only thing that could make the local situation any better at this point.

It appears to me we lost any opportunity for reform with the last election and have only three more years of tax hikes and bad services to look forward to.

I hope I'm proven wrong.

I agree with everyone who loves Morelia. Beautiful and vibrant city.(The parts we have seen anyway.)

There's a great restaurant in the Hotel Casino, Restaurant Lu. Don't miss it but sit inside, very nice and quiet.

Now if they'd just go after the taggers there...

It's the only claim to fame we seem to have here in Lakeside today, the near total eradication and suppression of graffiti, and it sure isn't the result of our failed municipal government. It is because of our graffiti warriors from Chapala to the Jocotepec line, with the help and sponsorship of the local Realtors.

Thanks to all.

I too love the area. The best of it all is to travel around the lake, visiting each pueblo as you go. Be sure to visit the local churches. They are real creepy and quite interesting but the scenery of meadows and horses around the lake are mesmerizing. A trip to the island of Janitzio is a special event. Climb to the top if you have the stamina. The only thing I didn't is the food of the area.
