Dr. Vargas did both of my eyes in 2012. I now have perfect vision in both eyes. You will need to wear sunglasses when you are out in the sun forever.

I will warn you that after the first visit to check the eyes after the surgery, he wants follow ups monthly at $600 pesos a time.

i only went once more after the free one, but his work was excellant.

I had cataract surgery a few years ago with Dr. Vargas and can see at a distance perfectly, but need glasses for reading. He seems very thorough, speaks adequate English and is at the Ajijic Clinic for preliminary and follow up exams on certain weekdays. It used to be Tuesdays; may still be.

The surgery itself is done at Puerto de Hierro hospital in Guadalajara, a beautiful facility with every kind of modern equipment.

I consider his fees reasonable, for a specialist.

I had an eye exam by Dr. Vargas about 1 year ago and the worst ever, he would not listen to me, I have had Lasik surgery in the US 3 times and my eyes are sensitive and dilate very easy, he insisted on continuing to put more drops in my eyes, by the time I got home I was in so much pain I went to bed. Got up the next day and still was dilated until that afternoon, never again. Still looking for a good eye Dr. here or in Guadalajara, still nervous about going to anyone and starting to have a hard time seeing.

That doesn't sound like the Dr. Vargas who treated me, but I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Someone on here recommended Dr. Rios. I've heard good things about that doctor.

"I have had Lasik surgery in the US 3 times..."

Wow, I have had no success (US) getting any doc to do Lasik even the second time... they say it is too risky for the benefit received (for me) and may do irreparable damage. Obviously YMMV.

I've had a second Lasik as a followup to cataract surgery. A second or, even third, Lasik depends entirely on the individual's eyes and the corneal thickness, as explained by Dr. Rios.

Had cataract surgery wit Dr Vargas a year ago, perfect results. The hospital he uses looks like it was built yesterday and the people were absolutely great.

Got to have the other eye done in the next few months, going back again.

The cost was $1800 US a year ago.

JRM,

Hi, not sure if this conversation is closed.  I will be coming from Austin, TX to get cataract surgery in Guadalajara and then rest in Ajijic.  I have contacted several cataract surgeons but don't have the contact info for Dr. Vargas.  Does he have a website or email and does he speak English?

Thanks,

Dudleysmama

Dr. Vargas did my cataract surgery, also.  I am pleased with the results.

Here is his contact information

Dr. Jose Alberto Vargas Silva, cell phone 331 469 6110; email:  albertoftalmo@starmedia.com

He speaks excellent English.  I believe he comes to the Ajijic Clinic on Tuesdays.  He has an examining room there, but does the surgery at the Hospital Puerto de Hierro in Guadalajara.

Thanks so much for the info!  This is interesting......My information is Dr. Jose manuel Vargas Sanguis who has a bio on some type of association he is involved with.  He is definitely a cataract surgeon. He is also a surgeon at the Puerto de Hierro.  Is Jose Alberto Vargas Silva a different surgeon?

Hi there!

Can you PM me to explain what you mean?  I am scared to death of this surgery and need as much information as I can get.

tks,

Donna

I took the information directly from the business card he gives out to patients.  Spanish names are often expressed differently than ours are, but that's the Dr. Vargas who did my cataract surgery at Puerto de Hierro hospital.  I don't blame you for being scared.  I was, too, but they have very good, up to date equipment and a staff who are caring and competent.  I didn't feel a thing after the anesthesia they delivered, during which you are awake, but feel nothing (which is good).
