Next weekend May 9 and May 10 features some really madcap rarities:

Saturday, May 9th - Reefer Madness -
Once-sensational but now campy "public service" films unveiled the sordid worlds of sex, drugs, juvenile delinquency and having babies. Reefer Madness (1936) 73m. Aka. "Tell Your Children." is a cautionary tale that features a fictionalized and highly exaggerated take on the use of marijuana. A trio of drug dealers lead innocent teenagers to become addicted to "reefer" cigarettes by holding wild parties with jazz music. It became a campy cult classic in the 1970s.

Sunday, May 10th - King of the Zombies
(1941) 67 min. Dick Purcell, Joan Woodbury, Mantan Moreland. A fiendish Mad doctor creates Zombies for the Axis. Mantan Moreland turns this chiller into a hilariously funny film. From the 1920s thru the mid-1950s many films were made with all African-American casts for distribution to black cinemas and all-black audiences. These inexpensive but heartfelt little gems spanned all genres -- musical, dramatic, western, comedy and even horror -- and give a fascinating peak today inside a culture and world that has been largely overlooked by history.

All Weekend Morning Matinees include a mix of classic cartoons, newreels, soundies, Action serials Zorro and Flash Gordon, and are at Cinemas Del Lago, a fun two hour block that starts at 10:00 AM - Mexico time.
