French Bakery Closing

I am sorry to hear that the french bakery in west ajijic is closing for good. Saturday will be their last day.

Sophie and Patrice are moving back to France. Many of us will miss the wonderful pastries that they made. On the bright side, I won't have to go to the gym as often! Best wishes to them and their family.

I'll miss them but my waistline probably won't. I doubt if I'll find bread that good again. I could resist the pastries although I do admit that we indulged occasionally. Their bread was our downfall.

Wishing Patrice and Sophie and their family all the best for the future. Thanks.

Do we know what made them decide to return?

I talked to them today when picking up our bread order.

Patrice has a medical problem and, since they have health care in France, that is the reason they are returning. Drop in and wish them well in the next couple of days. They will be sorely missed.

How far west and where?

A kilometer? On the south side of the carretera just before the Ajijic cemetery. So behind the Hacienda Ajijic/Don Pedro.

The birds returning home for medical reasons are doing so because they have insurance or national health care plans that do not cover them here. Once your health declines to a certain level you no longer can cover expenses out-of-pocket. The people I know who left for medical reasons went to the U.S. because they have serious medical issues and need to access their Medicare and/or VA benefits. Those returning to Canada and France need their national health care plans there.

Xena is correct. We really liked the health care in the Guadalajara hospitals and by the group now at Quality Care/Medicos Especialistas. It was fantastic and far easier to deal with than the cumbersome system in the USA. However, even at the very reasonable prices and the wonderful care with a capital CARE, it was exhausting our financial resources. It also made us aware that eventually those resources would be seriously diminished by death of one, leaving the other with no safety net.

So, free VA care for me and Medicare + supplement for my wife, made it almost imperative to move to the USA after 13 wonderful years in the municipality of Chapala. I would rather not have moved, but ......... asi es la vida.

The French bakery is open again. Different French owners but they have many of the same products.

Could someone provide the name and location of this bakery?

Well, I totally failed to notice the date of that older post.  I looked at the map for the location.  Interesting, but I found two different addresses for this bakery, so now I am confused on its location.  Is it in Ajijic or closer to Rancho del Oro?  It looks like , of heading West, one street past Rio Zula.  Is that right?

Yes Zeb, it is one street past Rio Zula heading west out of Ajijic, almost across from Rancho del Oro.

Zeb, Ajijic is considered to extend to the west to San Juan Cosala, although personally I'd think to much the border of the municipality of Jocotopec, and to the east to San Antonio, mountains and to the north and th lake to the south.  Within Ajijic are many areas, fracas, cotos etc.. But yes, across from The Rancho del Oro next to Arrellenos restaurant.

Ajijic's borders stop at the end of La Floresta to the East and stop at the Jocotepec sign over the highway to the West.  (Or that's what most sources agree on.)

Yes exactly Gringal, la floresta is in Ajijic and San Antonio Tlay - a town as well - is adjacent marking the east border.  And yes too, the sign is what I've always thought it was one of the realtors or publications that mentioned San Juan.  Although I believe the sign is a little east of the actual chapala/joco border.

This is Heidi and I just got home from the bakery. THEY ARE NOT CLOSING!!!! Her parents returned to France for health reasons many, many months ago. As usual, the pastries and coffee were fantastic today. Rick stops there on the way home several times a week and we have never been disappointed! We're very happy that this thread was incorrect!
