camacho
Today my husband and I went to eat in the restaurant Taste of Thai, the problem with this place is that they obligate to us to give the 10% of tip. We did not gave to them the complete 10% of tip because we do not have change but that is not the point. The point is that in Mexico is not obligatory to gave tip. I am upset with this place and I will go to PROFECO.
gringal
I've never heard of this happening at other restaurants. It will be interesting to hear what PROFECO has to say about it.
El Menudo
I don't understand. I eat there all the time and a tip has never been added to my check. Only the items purchased, and I check it too.
JayBearII
I always tip 15% to 20%, which is my prerogative. I do not fault those who tip less, and I tip less if there is poor service, but I tend to go to places where the service is exemplary, as I get easily irritated with poor service. IMHO, it is up to the diner as to what they leave as a tip. I do not like the tip being included in the price. This is NOT the point of a tip, but perhaps the restaurant is having trouble with people who do not leave tips? I hope all of you are leaving good tips. I would not dine out if I could not afford a good tip. I do like good service, it is part of the dining experience for me, and BTW, waiters are people, try looking them in the eye, asking their names, and treating them well. I have been here 8 years, and waiters tend to move around and recognize me from where they used to work. It is a small town here! I am grateful for the people who look out for me, including the waiters. Special accolades to Marco Antonio, whose father I knew, and who is working his way up! There are 1001 things to learn to be a good waiter. IMHO waiters here are terrific, way ahead of the snooty/snotty/snorky waiters in other climes! I realize I am sounding snorky here, but really folks, if you cannot leave a good tip for your waiter, please do not go out to dine, as I do not wish to make up for your cheapness, QED! Guest
I agree, Jay. 10%? What is the problem? If the tip has to be included in the check, then most people are probably not leaving a tip. Common courtesy if you are served by a thoughtful and attentive server. If you cannot afford to tip, then stay home and dine there.
SunshineyDay
Interestingly I talked to a waiter about this awhile back and he said that the problem that happens the majority of the time is little or no tips from certain nationalities. So as not to start a fight I will not mention the nationalities. Maybe this was based on his personal experience only. Come on folks waiters earn almost no salary or wage. They support their families on tips. Not just here but all over the world. Tips are incentive for good service.
pepez
Are you sure it wasn't just a "suggested" tip? Had lunch at Adelita's last week and across the bottom of the bill was the 10%, 15%, and 20% tip. None were included, but it made it easier to calculate. LakeViews
If you don't like it, don't eat there but don't go complain - that's petty. I always tip...

I am upset with this place and I will go to PROFECO. But wait--what is this person saying to us? That they got a bill with an "obligate" to pay "10% per cent of the tip"? We can figure out that they mean they were asked to pay a 10% tip on the total of their bill, I guess. But does Taste of Thai tell patrons they must add a 10% of the total of the bill as a tip? None of the recent postings about this restaurant mentioned this. Does it happen? And the poster is going to Profecto to protest??? Is that not just off the wall? This is Comacho's first post. Is this a troll? Maybe he/she is amusing himself with this nonsensical post. As many of us have said--again and again--we tip at least 15%. As for Adelita's telling you at the bottom of the check what a 10%, 15%, 20% tip would come to based on the total bill--OMG I loved it. It's for the gals like me (and maybe some guys) who simply have trouble with simple math. To me, it's an innovative helping hand so we don't over tip or stiff the wait staff. The latter, to me, is the important part. Lexy
PULELEHUA
I am with those who do not quite understand what caused the OP to be so upset and also with those who understand the importance of the gratuity to the lives of the wait staff. ComputerGuy
The owner of Taste of Thai is a jerk and a burro, and I make no apologies for saying that. Be prepared to have tables and chairs put up if you get there past 7:20, while you are eating. His adding a forced gratuity to the bill is just one more example of his idiocy. Anyone in this area who thinks they can add a forced tip on a regular meal will be out of business sooner, rather than later. Tipping is a cultural thing. No one tips in Australia, or Japan, or Belgium. When you are expected to tip, you do so based on the service. Forcing you to tip means you are either a moron, or you don't pay your staff enough. REC
Wow - what an amazing thread. If the owner is a jerk punish HIM by not going back - the NEXT time. But don't punish the waiter who lives on tips. It is an incredibly hard job. The good ones make it look easy but it is not. The waiter doesn't decide when to stack up the chairs, how the bill is calculated, what is on the menu, how it is prepared, portion size, how long you have to wait, etc. And we aren't in Australia, Japan or Belgium. Tip and tip well - always!!! Going to PROFECO over what, a couple of bucks at the most? What an incredible waste of PROFECO's resources.

solajijic
A tip is not incentive for good service it is the reward for good service. A better tip is the reward for excellent service. A living wage would be the better deal for everyone. It would be interesting to know if everyone got an automatic 10% tip on their bill or just this couple. They state they did not give the complete tip amount because they did not have change. I would venture a guess that is the usual situation for this couple and the waitperson knew it. Old family saying....I don't pay you for your time I pay you for the value you bring to the hour.
Shelley Ronnfeldt
I have never noticed a mandatory tip on my Taste of Thai bill, but I'll look more closely next time. If it's on there and included in the tab, I'd probably only tip 5-10% on top of that. I never, ever stiff a waiter unless their service is absolutely appalling. Mainecoons
It is my understanding that most wait staff here work for tips and receive little or no pay. I tip depending on quality of service and price of meal. It is just as much work for a waiter to serve me a breakfast at Salvador's that costs less than 50 pesos as it would to serve me a much more expensive meal, so I tip 20-25 percent there, usually 15 percent for more expensive meals, less if the service isn't good. There are a lot of waiters here who aren't very skilled at their job, unfortunately.
ComputerGuy
I'm railing against the owner's policy, not the wait staff. I tip everywhere I go, based on quality of service. Period.
HaggisLover
For all you folks who have no clue, where the word TIPS comes from, it goes back to british times, in the Stage coach era, after travelling in the cold of England the Coach would pull up at the Inn, what we call today the Maitre'd would greet you,and you would tip him to get the closest to the fire, and be first to get your required refreshment, called TIPS, 'TO INSURE PROMPT SERVICE' I totally reject all you N.americans calling people cheap, other nations see it as a scam not to pay decent wages, this is a way to insure the owners profit, don't start telling the world that we should conform to your twisted thinking, it has become a scam by the owners not to pay their staff decent wages, while they pocket the rest, staff should not have to depend on Charity to feed their families, so please refrain from accusing people of being Cheap, because they disagree with your mentality

slainte39
Was in Ireland for 6 weeks, returning in June, never had a tip added in once, and ate in restaurants the whole time. Some of that time was in Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. Don't know about England.
ajijicsolomon
Cheap people don't like to hear that they are cheap. Got it. If one does not tip, they are cheap. Agreed LakeView.the tip is part of the cost of eating out. If you can't afford to tip you should not go out. Plain and simple. You are taking money away from the server by taking up space. It is selfish IMO> Sorry to be so harsh. Obviously the amt is up to the individual. If there is a reason such as terrible service that is a different matter. Joyfull
Spoke to the owners of two restaurants that we like to go to and asked why they were not open on Sunday's since it is so busy here in Lakeside then. Both had the same answer. They said because of the Tapatios, that they come and sit for 3-5 hours in big groups and do not leave tips. I am just saying what Mexican restaurant owners have told me.
