You fill out the "leaving Mexico" half of the immigration form, and show that to the guy in the INM window along with your passport, temporal, and boarding passes. When you return by car, you just follow their directions for filling out paperwork. I'd imagine they have you fill out the "entering Mexico" part, just like you would do if you're on the plane.
