ComputerGuy
Beginning a new leg of my cooking experience, I'm doing some Thai dishes. Pad and a few others call for tamarind sauce/paste. This is a popular flavour in Mexico, but I'm not sure what section of the store to look in.
More Liana
Chances are you're going to have to make tamarind paste yourself. It's not difficult, just fiddly--peeling the pods, simmering the fruit, taking out seeds and strings, kneading the pulp into a paste. The good news is you can make enough at once to last a while. I haven't seen the jarred paste even here in the DF, where I shop in a very complete Chinese wholesale grocery store.
ComputerGuy
Thanks, More. Don't really want fiddly at this stage. =sigh=
CCC
I have seen Tamarind sauce in Walmart, on the aisle where they have packaged drink mixes. Near the very back towards the meat secrion, on the south wall. It is in about a 750 ml size, among the drink syrups like Pina Colada. It is made for adding to drinks but the flavour is fairly authentic.
CHILLIN
There is lots of tamarind pulp suppliers in Mexico. https://www.google.com.mx/search?q=pasta+pulpo+de+tamarindo&client=firefox-a&hs=43K&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=np&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=4RTAU6qGLYH48AH54YHYDQ&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1262&bih=881#channel=np&q=pasta+de+tamarindo+mexico&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch I don't know how you feel about ordering on line in Mexico - but this company has a lot of tasty products. It is better to ship to one of the mail drops, where there is someone always "home". https://www.google.com.mx/search?q=pasta+de+tamarindo+mexico&client=firefox-a&hs=e9z&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=np&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=PRHAU8b0N-LW8AH9sICwAg&ved=0CCUQsAQ&biw=1262&bih=881#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=Z9HF9BMdS7H7iM%253A%3BMxXJrfyhJuUh_M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.interfoods.mx%252Fskin%252Ffrontend%252Fdefault%252Fmoderninterfoods%252Fposteos%252Faguatam%252F2.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.interfoods.mx%252Fpulpa-tamarindo-500-grs-para-prepara-agua-fresca.html%3B701%3B486
More Liana
Did you check at SL? I'd look in the jars of Asian sauce aisle first. Pancho might have it. And I truly understand about fiddly.

CCC
That is mix for tamarind flavored aqua fresca. Similar to horchata. I dug it out of the cupboard. It says Pulpa de Tamarindo. It is not a mix, it is a bottle of thick consistanc, like a puree or sauce. I would post a pic but they never work on this forum.
camillenparadise
It's what I use with fish sauce in my pad Thai... brand name is "f-diaz" pulpo de tamarindo, big bottle claims to make 40 liters of agua tamarindo, which I seriously doubt. But not fiddly!
Wookie
While you are making that Pad Thai, try mixing yourself a tamarind margarita ... they are to die for!

I bought it once--never again. There are others on that shelf, including the one for horchata that someone else mentioned.
the walkers
liters of tamarind concentrate at "El Granero", on the carretera in Ajijic across from the hospital and next to "Gossips".
CHILLIN
There is instant one with sugar in it. It is very popular. I like it and Jamaica one too, Instant Horchata -not so much. But there is definitely unsweetened concentrate too. Think about how many litres of sugar syrup you would have to add to make 4 litres. Just read the label, if it has one. If iit doesn't have one, then it is most likely unsweetened. There is apparently a concentrate for "tuba", a delicious drink made from the fruits of coconut palms - but I have never been able to find it.
