US marine held in Mexican jail Tijuana

In light of the Marine veteran being held by Mexican authorities for mistakenly crossing the border with firearms in his possession, I wonder how many people consider what it is like to visit or travel to a country that does not have respect for justice or liberty like you have in your home country.

Where you are placed in jail even if someone accuses you of a minor offense. It is indeed something to think about before moving south.

And of course, no one is ever jailed unjustly in the states?

I can't help but wonder why the unfortunate Marine chose to attempt bringing firearms across the border, but more than one of us has moments of just plain stupidity from time to time.

I remember an atmosphere of "liberty" in the states from long, long ago (unless you happened to be Japanese during WWII), but it seems to have evaporated in the pursuit of real or imaginary "terror". There was a time when Big Brother didn't need to watch everybody 24/7/365. Now, they do.

However, anyone who feels as you do should probably not consider moving to Mexico.

What do you think would happen to a Mexican being caught in the US with a bunch of guns in his

trunk ?

It is not a good idea to violate a country´s law. The fact that he was a Marine Veteran does not give

him permission to violate Mexican laws He violated Mexxican law in Mexico at the mercy of Mexico like it or not.

I cannot imagine why anyone who does not want trouble would be on the border with weapons anyway, he asked for it and he got it. That is life. He willl be a smarter man .

He did not cross by mistake, that has been cleared up for weeks. He crossed by foot in the afternoon, after crossing possibly 5 or 6 times before to visit a girlfriend there [they have video footage of him crossing that many times] , rented a hotel room, the reciept was in this week¨s TJ newspaper, and walked back across to get his pickup when he went through the "Nothing to Declare" and got caught.

Mistakenly? His girlfriend is from Tijuana and he has been there before. There are plenty of large well lit signs prior to that border crossing warning people about bringing weapons into Mexico. And then there's the question of whether a marine sufferring from PTSD should be driving around with assault rifles in the first place.Hopefully he'll take advantage of his stay and learn some Spanish.

Regardless of crossing a border or not, in the heads of some people it might be normal and completely acceptable for just anybody to carry guns, when travelling or driving around,..... but fortunately, not everybody thinks like that.

You carry a gun and you automatically empower yourself to play god and to possibly take someone else's life. I can understand the reason for self defence but that is by far outweighed by the high number of armed loony toonies in this world, who too often cause a lot of devastation.

I am not passing a judgement on this particular case because we don't know all the details.

Bigd, I am sitting here, trying to imagine a Mexican crossing the border into the United States and getting caught with contraband. The Mexican says, "Oh, I crossed the border by mistake. Big oooops" and the US officials say, "Oh, hey, no problem. Just turn around and head on home."

Yeah, no. That is not how it goes.

Bringing illegal weapons into Mexico is not a "minor offense." His weapons may be legal in his home country but that is not where he was. When he crossed the border, those weapons became illegal.

I have a great deal of respect for those who served in the military. But, I do not believe that forever more gives them a free pass to break laws, not in their own country and certainly not in someone else´s.

First thing that comes to mind is if a Mexican were to be caught bringing a firearm into the US he might be arrested and put in jail.....but he would have the Right to make bail and get out of jail. He would not be chained to his bed a beaten by anyone who passed by. I have lived in Mexico probably longer than most of you, since 1993. Most of that time I have been uneasy or uncomfortable with what could happen if the authorities or who ever decide one day I have done something wrong and I end up in jail trying to prove I am innocent. When you cross the border to Mexico you leave your human rights north of the border.

As far as breaking the law as soon as he crossed the border he told customs he had made a mistake called 911 for help admitted he had firearms in his car.

An Gringal if you like injustice you are living in the right place

Criminals carry guns and empower themselves to play God and possibly take someone's life. A person with a handgun permit to carry may save someone's life from a criminal. I would certainly appreciate that type of intervention, should I become in danger of losing my life to a criminal. But, if you don't want that help, maybe you could wear a sign saying, don't help me. :)

There are lots of wrong statements and assumptions on this topic. "What do you think would happen if armed Mexican crossed into the USA?"

Actually we know exactly what would happen. Over 300 armed Mexican military HAVE crossed "by accident" into the USA in last 10 years including an armed helicopter into teh Rio Grande valley. What did the US do to them? We sent them back to Mexico with no arrest or armed confrontation. This is probably a mistake, if we had jailed them in the US we could now do that ever popular Hostage Exchange. Why can't they treat our military like we have repeatedly treated theirs. You can listen to his call on San Diego UT newspaper website it was 1 hour later after customs detained him for 3 loaded guns in the cab and 2 were assault type rifle and shotgun and 400 or more rounds when he was waiting for pólice to come.

He was chained to a bed in the infirmary because he self inflected a wound to his neck and they are not locked up like the jail. He tried to escape and went over 3 razor wire fences on the roof of the jail also. No one beat him that he reported to the San Diego Unión Tribune newspaper reporter.

I think you are listening to someone who is full of non facts. He reported the facts and others are distorting the facts to advance their own agenda it appears.

Google Andrew Tahmooressi and read San Diego UT newspaper reports on the story they are following and get the real facts please.

good questions..just because some people cannot let go or accept each country for what it is.

There are pros and cons for each country if you like fair, justice , everything black and white, you

should not be living in Mexico.

It is not complicated..

Not sure where Alan gets his "facts". They are refuted by virtually all major news with the exception of the Mexican press. This guy called 911 as soon as he realized his mistake. The Mexican customs were going to send him back to the US until the army got involved. You can blow smoke till the cows come home but justice is justice in Mexico or the US

You're probably thinking about the case of Jon Hammar a former marine who in 2012 thought it would be okay to take his shotgun through Mexico on his way to Central America, luckily for him his mom is very media savvy and managed to get him released with the help of certain congressmen.

no justice is not justice everywhere , what is right and wrong is an agreement amongst people. It is justice for some groups to stone an aldutrous woman , alduterous being define by their own rules as well.

I do not agree with the way they think but it is their system and for them it is justice

,Not every culture has the same idea of right and wrong,

We had a very religious Afghan woman whocame to live with us for a year years ago and she was following Islam very closely. One day she asked me to take her to a porn movie so she would know what it was

about. I told her I did not think she was ready for it. We are talking about a woman that had never been out of Kabul never been out without a male relative and wore the burqua. She also studied to be a nurse and midwife as many women would die in child birth because the husband would not allow the male docotors to look at them.

I told her I would but that I did not think she was ready for it.

Later on that month we saw pumping iron. I think there is a scene shot from the back of all these guys running naked on the street. We were ther with a family so nothing anyine noticed.

WHen we returned home she told me she was totally shamed about the movie so I told her there was

nothing wrong with it and I funally got out of her that the shame was that my husband her guardian knew she had seen the movie and could kill her..a few month later she and girlfriends went to the porn flick and they were totlly fine with it..go figure.

Not everyoe look at things the same way. No right no wrong just difference perspective.

She went back to her country to marry a man she had never met and a year later was killed by the men

from her family so that she would not be raped by the Russian Army.

I heard that story later on by a cab driver in Ny..who knows if it is what happened to her but all communications stopped.

Thank you for the clarification..but why is this posted and staying on the Lakeside forum and not on the Mexico General?

What are you doing to help this man you are so concerned about? Hint: spewing your outrage on a primarily gringo web board is not doing him one bit of good.

As for us, we know full well the state of law and justice in Mexico and choose to live here anyway. That includes you. So, what is the point of this exercise?
