The translation app Word Lens is currently free for both iOS and android users. You can put it on your smartphone or tablet. It works by using the devices camera to translate signs, etc.

Enjoy!

Would you rate this better than Google Translate?

I have a different free app on my iPhone that works the same way: WAYGO. It accesses the phone on the camera: you just turn on the app, point the phone at the line of Chinese characters, and the English translation shows up on the phone's screen. It's available in Chinese and Japanese. I use it for items on the Chinese side of a restaurant menu. It kinda-sorta works--the app itself works fine, but the translations sometimes leave something to be desired. The precise words are translated, but if you don't know what a dish called tree forest flame actually is, you're still lost. And I don't.
