ComputerGuy
My daughter has a new iPhone so is giving me her iPhone 4. It's registered with Virgin in Canada, and she says they can release it for about 50 bucks. Then I can use it here with a new SIM. A few years back, I went about the unlocking process for a far less fancy phone here, and ended up having the thing sent to Guadalajara by one of the local TelCel stores... where it lingered for weeks and never quite lived up to my expectations. Anyone here had direct experience with getting an iPhone unlocked here, or should I just pay Virgin to do it for me?
eagles100
Hubby tried to have his iPhone 3 unlocked at the place near the bus station in Chapala and they wanted 1,400 pesos. Rogers charges $50. Hubby ended up buying a new iPhone at Telcel I wish I would have unlocked it with Rogers; it would have been a LOT cheaper. Then he asked me why he only got a lamp for Christmas, though darn looker of a lamp
ComputerGuy
Thanks for the insight. Is the the lamp you bought him?
eagles100
HAHA nope but that lamp is a classic; it's shaped like a sail or a sail boat. We're decorating our house in a maritime theme. He seen the lamp at the lighting store and said he wanted it.
ichbinsaege
I'm also curious about getting an iphone 4s unlocked down here. My son will be here all summer and wants to unlock his phone so he can use it here and there. Any suggestions would be great.
Gilligan
Have your provider unlock it, it is cheaper in the long run. AT&T does it for free.
Joco
Google "unlock iphone 4" and there are several pages explaining how to unlock one. Some are free and some are paid sites.
kiminmexico
I would have it done NOB. I've heard too many stories about trying to have them done in MX. None of them good.
Pogo
Was handed down a Rogers Iphone that was off contract. Paid Rogers to unlock it which they said they did - but did not. Tried to get it unlocked through a local Telcel shop. All they did was jailbreak it and install a very old version of IOS - 3.5 I think it was. The whole contrivance disappeared every time the phone was turned off. And while it was working, it was very iffy. Finally had to have folks in Canada go back to Rogers and fight with them (they were NOT nice or cooperative at all) until they finally completed the unlock from/through Apple somehow. It sort of worked, but then found that the Telcel sim would not work. UURRRGH! Finally bought a factory unlocked Iphone 5c from AT&T on a trip to the states. Brought it back to MX; had Telcel install the sim and it has worked like a charm. You may want to save yourself some trouble and trade in your IPhone 4 when you buy a new, FACTORY UNLOCKED 5c or 5s. Just sayin . . .
Cortland
You may want to talk to the Telcel store on the street that runs south of the carretera and just West of Plaza Bugambilias (where El Torito and Savadors are located) The Telcel store is on the west side below where the old casino was and opposite the parking garage behind E Torito. ComputerGuy
The trouble with a lot of these unlock tricks is many don't work, and some just brick your phone. That's why I'm looking for someone with direct experience.
Alpha1
My daughter has a new iPhone so is giving me her iPhone 4. It's registered with Verizon in Canada, and she says they can release it for about 50 bucks. Then I can use it here with a new SIM. A few years back, I went about the unlocking process for a far less fancy phone here, and ended up having the thing sent to Guadalajara by one of the local TelCel stores... where it lingered for weeks and never quite lived up to my expectations. Anyone here had direct experience with getting an iPhone unlocked here, or should I just pay Verizon to do it for me? I unlocked my own via http://unlockallcellular.com. At your price it may be a better deal to have them do it...
ComputerGuy
It's on a Virgin plan, not listed on that (and many other) pages. Plus, her friend (with lots of personal experience) tells me Apple has a database of all legit unlocked phones and from time to time (much like Microsoft with Windows) sweeps all phones and locks up any illegitimate ones. So thanks for all your suggestions, everyone; I think I'll save a lot of potential hassle and just git 'er dun.
eagles100
I looked into the internet unlock companies and most don't service Canadian cell phone providers and those who do were way more expensive than the provider itself.
LakeViews
I unlocked my 4s through AT&T and now use a pay as you go telcel amigo plan. As long as you have completed your 2 year commitment, or are willing to pay the termination fee, AT&T will unlock for free. Telcel will cut down a new SIM card to the proper iPhone size ( smaller ) and put it in the iPhone. AT&T phones work on the telcel network but Verizon phones may not, I think Verizon uses the CDMA standard which is a different radio transmitter than what telcel and att use. Yep, I just talked with my son and his is verizon and it has cdma, which doesn't use a SIM card. The phones here are GSM. We just figured out its easier if i just buy him a cheapo cell with credits and he can use the iphone in wifi areas for all his apps. There are so many free wifi areas down here, it's not worth my paying for him to have a data plan.

Works perfect. She sent it to Guadalajara. Do not download any updates till unlocked. I bet today should be cheaper. Now I want a 5s

Canada-Mike
I guess I was lucky. I had my old iPhone 4 unlocked a long time ago. Brought it down with me, got a Telcel SIMM card and have had no trouble at all. Telcel even gave me 9 amigo numbers at under a peso a minute. Cheers,Michael
pappysmarket
Did you have to take a monthly fixed price plan to get that deal?
