Re arrest of Secretary of State: A little more than a scandal. This man was acting Governor of Michoacán. Apparently, it is very unusual for a politician at this level to be arrested and for the investigation to be so public, so soon. I am interested to read more of the results of the investigation.

I am glad that you posted a link to the interview with Dr. Mireles. It is funny how people interpret things differently. Certainly, that article does provide an alternative explanation to what I have read on other sites. I read it and I was in awe of the resolve of many of these people. I can not imagine having to make the choices these people have to make.

The investigation has widened. Jose Trinidad Martinez, who is identified as a Michoacan public transportation official and former local PRI deputy has also been detained. He is charged with attending the same meeting with Templario leaders that led to the detention of Reyna. Three local mayors also attended the meeting. The PAN and PRD parties are pressing for a thorough and open investigation. The PRI government has pledged to follow the evidence wherever it leads. We'll see....

My read is that the more reasonable faction of the Autodefensas have decided to declare victory over the Templarios and go home, leaving the remnants of the organization in the hands of the criminal wing.

I spent all last week in Michoacán, ranging from the Tierra Caliente to Morelia. I talked with many, many people from all socio-economic levels and every range of society, from housekeepers and taxi drivers to internationally known artists and highly-placed state government officials. EVERYONE, to a person, is grateful for the intervention of the autodefensas. Most people I talked to believe that Dr. Mireles is a hero.

Funny how 2 people can read the same article and get 2 opposite reads. Guess where you are coming from has something to do with it, no?

And others disagree. Here's an article from the New York Times of February 24 of this year.

I certainly would think that the autodefensa would "frighten" many, especially those associated with the CT, no?

I trust voices on site in Michoacán last week more than voices being quoted in the NYTimes in February. The autodefensas had barely started their campaign for peace on February 24; this week, they are more than six weeks in and have shown who they are and what they stand for. I'm willing to be proven wrong about this, but if there is proof, it will come sometime down the line.

Michoacan government official Jose Trinidad Martinez Pasalagua, who was detained last week for colluding with the Templarios, has been released from detention due to lack of evidence.

Well. That is almost not a surprise. More shocking news coming out today, but it is just hard to know what is real. The only good thing is that there are journalists who are very, very brave who are not giving up on finding the truth and questioning everything. I do not know how they do their jobs, who they can trust for real information. The public is so easily manipulated by news. I am beginning to understand why my Mexican friends are so cynical about everything.

I remember what the Teacher said to the producer of the Chanel 4 interview that was on YouTube, earlier this year. He said the real people in power never give interviews, you do not know who they are.... they are too smart for that. And the latest news sounds like a bomb and explains why some people would be afraid of the AD and others would be welcoming. It is crazy. Someone is going to make a movie about this. We all know who the hero will be. I just hope the ending is not a tragedy. Have to pray for Peace in Michoacán, if so inclined.

No one reading this thread should be confused or misled about the nature of this investigation into the collusion between public officials in Michoacan and the Templarios. Although this Martinez Pasalagua guy has been released from detention, Jesus Reyna, the former secretary of state and interim governor, is still locked up. Anyone who believes the government would protect some minor political figure and not the major one is making an obvious misjudgment. The investigation into Martinez Pasalagua continues and he may well be arrested once again.

For some reason I can not post links with this interface. Go and read the article by Anabel Hernandez on Proceso.com.mx

It makes my head spin. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, I find out I know very little. My stomach is in knots. I feel, living in Mexico, I am closer to living in the real world without all the candy coating that I am used to. I feel my life in Canada is like Disney Land compared to this. And to think this Country is so much better than many in the world at this time.

I find it hard to believe and it really does seem like a movie with many plot twists. And it is happening just next door.

Wish I could post the link, but please do read it.

I am so frustrated that I can not embed links. I use the little link icon, above, and the dialog pops up. Entering the data and hitting OK or Cancel does not work and I have to end the session, close the browser and start over again.

The title of Anabel Hernandez's article is: The Drug War - Michoacán: The Godfather of Godfathers

It is on Proceso.com.mx

BorderlandBeat also has a link to the article on the forum, about 8 items down. Really worth reading.

Apatzingan mayor Uriel Chavez Mendoza has been ordered to be held in prison pending the outcome of his trial on charges of corruption and collusion with the Templarios. The article contains some interesting details on how he shook down city council members and diverted federal funds to the Templarios.

This is kinda interesting. It's supposedly a video clip from a meeting between Templarios jefe Servando Gomez (La Tuta), Michoacan secretary of state Jesus Reyna and Michoacan transportation official Jose Trinidad Martinez Pasalaguas. Reyna is currently in jail on charges of collusion with the Templarios, Martinez was arrested and later released due to "lack of evidence" and Gomez is the subject of an intensive manhunt.

ValGal, when you're looking at an article you want to insert here as a link, just highlight the entire URL, copy, and paste it in the spot you want it. No need to use that unfriendly link function. Works for me.
