Floradude
Today I went to the Banamex bank in Chapala. I was armed with every document one could possibly need. This included my CURP and my brand new RFC tax number that I got online from with website provided by Intercasa. I told them I wanted to open a new account (my first in Mexico). Surprise: nothing needed but my passport, Visa document, and proof of address. It was really quite easy.

Mad_Max
the RFC is a Jan 1 requirement I think
Intercasa
RFC will be needed Jan 1st and don't be surprised if they ask existing account holders for it later on.

alacran26
Question for Spencer. If you have an RFC, does that mean you have to file a tax return with Hacienda yearly even if you don't earn any wages or money in Mexico? That was my understanding. Intercasa
No, the new law states that the online RFC is for people who do not have to file tax returns.
annadon7
Spencer-question: How do I get an RFC? And when I get it, do I simply inform my Mexican bank?
Intercasa
You can get it online or we can do it for you, someone at a bank told me they are putting off the requirement until April, an RFC number is good to have in any event like the CURP number. Orygun Duck
Okay, what's a CURP number and who can get one? (and why would I need one?) BTW, we are home owners here on tourist visas and have a Banamex account for convenience. Ignorance isn't always bliss, especially living abroad.
