Documents needed to transfer ownership of Mexican plated car

Recommended Posts

You need the original factura.

The original factura from the Mexican car dealership functions as a "title" / ownership document. The current owner simply hand writes a few sentences on the back of the factura saying that they certify that they are the official owner of vehicle with VIN number _______, and they agree to sell the vehicle to ______________ , followed by the owner's signature, name, and date.

I would personally insist on seeing a current state registration document - generally called a Tarjeta de Circulacion - to prove the current owner's name - that it is not stolen, and be sure that any tenencias owed were paid. Jalisco does have temporary registrations without Tarjetas de Circulacion: http://www.jalisco.gob.mx/es/tramites/4981 - but most owners would have a Tarjeta de Circulacion for their vehicle.

Thanks for that advice. Is it necessary to have a copy of the vendors passport or drivers licence or?????

No, it is not necessary. Just the original factura (dealer's invoice) with the name of the vendor and his/her signature as stated above.

I suggest that the seller go with you to make the transfer. That way, if there are tickets or other charges against the car, you can get him to pay them or cancel the deal. Those charges stay with the vehicle, not the person, and you should not have to pay his unpaid tickets, etc., if any.
