How long do they live? I have some old ones that do not look good right now but the ants have been feasting on them so I really do not know if their sad shape is due to age or to the rains and the ants.

They are about 40 years old.

I don't know how long they live but it is probably a long time.

IF the ants are not held in check they will eat the bugambilia leaves.

If your plants are old they will probably benefit from a major pruning. Not to worry because they bloom on new growth; not the old stem.

Throw any old fertilizer around the base of the plants and let the rains/sprinklers water it in.

Thanks, they are pruned regularly and the ants get killed but more come back. They are very difficult tp predict, we have a large lot so it is not easy to check every place but I do it every night when it is not raining. The plants are over 40 years old and some of the older trunks are rotting but more growth are coming out of the rot...I was trying to get an idea if it was time to pull them and plant new ones but I hate to pull old plants out..

I would just leave them as long as they are producing flowers. Some of mine are 25 years old.
