cedros
I'm planning on buying a 630 receiver as I really need to be able to record some shows. I'm concerned as to how I will activate it. When I brought my new Shaw equipment I followed the suggestions made on this board and the instructions Shaw made. I told Shaw it was for my cabin in the backwoods of BC and that I would do the installation myself. I was told I had to activate it from the Vancouver phone number that I used to deal with Shaw. So after I got everything set up in Mexico a friend who lives at my Vancouver address activated it. It took him 3 tries before he was successful. On the first one he tried using his cell phone but they rejected that number and the activation. I'd rather not go that route again as my friend isn't very good at making things up. So how can I activate it from Mexico when my equipment is supposed to be in BC? Should I change my phone number registered at Shaw to a Skype one and then they won't know where I'm phoning from? Are there other solutions. Should I somehow try to register it in Vancouver with someone who has Shaw? This isn't home away from home so can't go that route. Ajijic
SHAW has customer service for chat on-line from something like 8 am to 6 pm, weekdays. Their web site will give exact details. I just used that service and it was great and no need to call.

Go Solar
Call them from a CDN Vonage area code phone or Magic Jack equivalent. If you don't have that, you can try the ComWave e-phone app for smartphones & tablets, which lets you choose a US or C area code also and is free to set up and use. Why not just be honest & tell Shaw that the receiver is for your vacation home in Mexico. We set up our system by phone from Ajijic using our Canadian address as home address. I have called Shaw a few times & they have helped me through problems fully knowing that I was in Ajijic.
Ezzie
I just activated a new 630 here at Lakeside and did it over my Magic Jack. I had to disclose that this is my vacation home install as I have a different type of dish set up here and as a result, the "V" code is different than what is used to activate the 630 I have at my home address in Canada. Shaw Technical Support needs to know this in order to get the box to work properly. In Canada I have a 60E dish with the new xKu tri-satellite LNB. Here I have 2 separate dishes with LNB's (one for each bird) with a 4x4 switch. Works great!!

Its my understanding that (just recently) they will not allow out of Canada locations, even as a secondary address.
chartiec
If you have a Canadian address you should be able to activate it. Just don't tell them that this receiver is in Mexico
johanson
That is what they told me about the receiver I had in Seattle. My real and legal Canadian address is on Vancouver Island. This was in May. And they said that my Seattle receiver had to be deactivated. I guess it was I don't know. I watch DirecTV when in the US and further south. I am very happy therefore that Ezzie was able to activate his receiver outside of Canada
cedros
If you have a Canadian address you should be able to activate it. Just don't tell them that this receiver is in Mexico They can tell from your IP address or the phone number that you aren't in Canada. Activation time I've heard is when they try to sort out of Canada receivers.

If you read my first post you will see that I couldn't do it honestly. So if I'm suddenly trying to activate one in Mexico I could jeopardize my whole account. I'd have to get Magic Jack or Vonage or some other service I'll never use again. There must be some way.
Go Solar
Skype should also work. Many people NOB use VOIP telephony as their main / only phone now.
fordtruckman
Call customer service on SKYPE (or whomever). They'll ask you to confirm either your address or phone number on account and you will continue the story you're at your cabin.... They can think wherever they want your cabin to be. According to the CSR I spoke with last month they are discontinuing the "home away" program for people traveling outside Canada to the US or Mexico. Ajijic
I didn't see anything there about activating a receiver. I asked them to activate by email. I have done it before. This time a problem so I chatted on their new pop-up chat service and we went through problem solving as receiver does not work. I chatted for a half hour trying solve the activation problem. Some worry too much. :-)
ComputerGuy
I PMd you. I can tell you they don't care what number shows up on their display, as long as you don't make a point of telling them where you are. Skype works fine, as others have pointed out. The Home Away From Home program has been changed: it now costs 50% of your primary Shaw bill to have a second address.

ComputerGuy
No, that's if you want the HAFH program. If you just want to move your receiver back and forth, that's up to you. They don't care where it is. NOTE: the box is not on a network, so there is no IP.
hensley
I have a new 600 coming and I hope I don't have any problem hooking it up. Do I just need to add a dual LNB to make this work? I guess I will e-mail my Account Specialists.
ComputerGuy
If you already had a 50x series, you don't need to do anything; the 60x will work just fine. The new satellite is not available here no matter what you do.
Ezzie
The 600 requires only one cable from the dish/switch to it, the 630 (PVR) requires 2 cables (labelled on the back, 1 & 2) in order to receive all channels that you are subscribed to. You need at least a dual LNB (or two dishes with single LNBs) combined through a switch.
