House exchange, Ajijic or Baltimore for San Francisco

Recommended Posts

June 20 to July 7 or thereabouts. Overseas family of 4 need to visit elderly family in San Francisco, Berkeley specifically but nearby is good enough. Have central village Ajijic house or Baltimore Inner Harbor townhouse or Virginia Beach house and a Naples FL canal house to exchange. these are all family second homes so available just about anytime. Exchange or share Doesn't have to be at the same time. Thanks

Two children 4 and 6. Well-traveled and obedient. Most of their time will be spent with cousins house in GGPark area and grandparents house. Just not enough room for everyone.

A couple of you have indicated places but without kids. The kids will be at Jewish day camp Monday thru Friday and then they will be hanging out with their cousins at the cousins house near GGP. The parents will be spending their days accessing and arranging for the elder inlaws needs.

Berkeley and East Bay Homes are primarily located in the HILLS- lots of stairs- inside and outside + decks up high- dangerous for kids who are not accustomed and a big Liability issue for Homeowners and their insurance policies-

reason so many homeowners will not take chance to exchange with younger kids in family

SFO and East Bay rated #3 worst traffic cities in USA after LA and DC

285,000 cars cross the Bay Bridge every day means long wait to cross bridge with 16 lanes of toll booths + toll $ 5.00 and delayed traffic drive thru city to GG park ---SFO to East BAy same problem-

It's all about Location- Location
where do you want Home Exchange to be --- Berkeley East Bay or SFO near GG ???

The best location for you to take the kids is around the GG park. There are several areas that are very different but there are lots of homes around there.

The next best is probably the Marina. Pacific Heights, Russian Hill area as you can go against commute on city streets.

Forget the East Bay the commute to the GG area is a nightmare. That would be the worst.

The Peninsula traffic is not great either and Hwy 1 is pretty foggy at that time of the year.

The Marina is not a bad area to get to the GG and if someone could meet you at the ferry every morning and pick you up the Marin county area is very nice and has a nice climate. The ferry leaves from Larkspur and Tiburon.

By the way the Temple or Synagogue may have people in their congregation who would exchange.

The Sea Cliff area is also a very nice area near one of the Temples. It is the area where Senator Feinsten lives.

By the way where is the camp? in the Sunset area off 19th or in another area? The Sunset and the Richmond areas are adjacent tot eh GG so that would be a good area as far as access. Lousy climate but lots of fun and good restaurants especially Asian .

Re read your OP Elderly family in Berkeley-

East BAy cities Walnut Creek, Lafayette , Orinda are the closest points to your family in Berkeley. Only a 15 min. drive from Walnut Creek by freeway-up over the Hill from Orinda

This area is upper middle class, lots of homes with pools. Better Weather than Ajijic- This time of year

Always Sunny today 75 day-54 night- June in the 80's always sunny- cool nights- no fog-

Walnut Creek is the largest - family friendly suburban community with a great downtown, shopping, restaurants etc and is also rated by Money Mag as one of the top 5 retirement cities in the US

BART - BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT -http://www.bart.gov/stations/

Fast Commuter train from suburban East Bay to Berkeley and San Francisco-

Stations in Walnut Creek,Lafayette (my old station) Orinda- with parking-- Great elevated train- goes through/under the mountains- into downtown Berkeley 15-20 min and also directly Under SFO Bay to Market st. downtown SFO - 35 min, also continues on to the Airport. Much faster and easier than driving to the city- but would have to bus it to GGPark or have family pick up at station

yes read the op it says the cousinsĀ“ house is near the GG. and so is the camp Most temples and synagogues are in that area as well. To me it makes sense to stay close to where the cousins live and by the time the kids have been droppped off at camp you can go over to the East Bay by bus bart or car whatever you like.

I lived in San Francisco and at one time had to go to Richmond or Berkeley, I always drove and it was not the end of the world if I left around 9.30am or 10. It was pretty bad if I had to be anywhere around 8 or 9..

Berkeley would be best. They will rent a car. The adults will spend most of the day helping the elderly parents decide what to do next. The kids at camp.

We thought since we had quite few options to trade we would see if anyone wanted to do an informal exchange. The Baltimore, Virginia Beach and Naples houses are second homes so they are available year round. The Ajijic house is available whenever as we can always find someplace to go, but it comes with 3 cats. And a Islamorada Florida Key house could be available Sept-Oct-Nov.
