San Pedro Vista - New Lookout

About 5km. east of Mezcala lies the indigenous community of San Pedro. High above the town there is a recently added lookout where you can park and walk around and take pictures. It looks like eventually this will be a picnic area. The view from the parking area has to be one of the most spectacular I have seen anywhere around the lake. You can see most of the communities along the north and south shores from this vantage point including Mezcala and Scorpion Islands. If you go, take a set of binoculars and your camera. There are a couple of ways to get there - just be careful as there are no guard rails and the drop-offs are hundreds if not thousands of feet down in some areas.

The easiest drive and fastest way to get there from Chapala is to head north toward the airport and take the La Barca/Ocotlan exit - head east on 35. When you get to Poncitlan, turn right off the highway just past the Pemex station. There is a sign there pointing to Mezcala. As you crest the mountain pass (about 8km. south of Poncitlan), you come to a "T" intersection. The parking area is just to the right of the "T".

If you would like to visit the town of San Pedro (you won't find any gringos or tourist facilities there), you continue right at the "T" and go down the mountain. The road is steep, has many switchbacks and is cobble, however it is in good condition and wide enough to allow traffic to pass. There are no guard rails. Near the base of the mountain you pass a large graveyard on the left. If you keep left (a Y intersection) you continue on down into the town. If you go right, the road continues on and connects with the main road to take you west to Mezcala (and eventually Chapala) along the north side of the lake. Until you get to the east side of Mezcala, the road is single lane with concrete strips to drive along. If you encounter oncoming traffic, there is usually enough room for each to pull over and pass. Watch out for the inverted topes (arroyos)!!

No walking involved. The parking lot is the lookout area at this time. There looks to be a building or roofed over area under construction a little higher up at the very top of the mountain with road access but not sure what it is going to become.
