Can't put it off any longer..well medicare does kick in this year. But I thought I would see what can be done here in Mexico as opposed to an operation in the USA to repair my damaged knee. Any recommendations or plaes to avoid?

One very good doctor in Guadalajara that specializes in knees (English skills unknown but translators are easier to find than good doctors)

Doctor Jose Antonio Gonzalez Alvarez

33 3630 3103

Dr. Santiago Hernandez might also have a suggestion for a knee specialist

From personal experience I recommend Dr. Francisco Arroyo Paz and Dr. Nicolas Valladares Lozada. Dr. Arroyo is the head of Sport Med Clinica de Medicina del Deporte and Dr. Valladares is one of the Ortopedia y Traumatologia specialist. You might make an appointment with Dr. Arroyo first and he will order the tests needed to evaluate your situation and then bring in the surgeon/s that are needed ... or, in the alternative suggest therapy or brace if needed. They do all kinds of sports related surgeries and are very well known in their field. They operated, along with a neurosurgeon that is also affiliated with their clinic, on my neck. I have been extremely pleased with the results. Phone numbers: 333 656-6999 / 333 656-7233 / 333 640-4310 & Emergencies: 333 944-9285. Dr. Valladares' cell: 331-383-6035. I will not give address because when I was being treated they were in the process of building and moving into a new facility and I am sure they have moved by now. If the phone numbers have changed just use Dr. V's cell phone. They both speak very good English ... however, the receptionist did not. If you decide to have surgery you will then need physical therapy afterward. I used the physical therapy doctor behind Ajijic Clinic and Dr. Valladares wrote his instructions for her and also spoke to her on the phone. It worked out great.

I would highly recommend Dr. Leonardo Millan who I was referred to through Dra. Teresa Morales in Jocotepec. His e-mail is drmillan2012@gmail.com.

I had total knee replacement surgery at the end of December last year in Guadalajara. Three years before that I had knee replacement surgery on the other knee, in Ontario. I would say that the experience with Dr. Millan was at least equal to, if not better, that up north. One of the advantages with Dr. Millan is that all the follow up visits can be done in Jocotopec, instead of having to drive into Guadalajara as with many of the other surgeons.

I interviewed 3 other surgeons and decided that Dr. Millan was the right choice for me.

For physio, I would recommend Adriana Diaz Badial Cell: 333 955 1625 Email: aditedb@hotmail.com

Adriana came to the house, which was very convenient.

Dr. Jorge Gonzalez Uzur replaced both of my hips and almost everyone I know....he speaks good English and your initial appointment is at Mascaras Clinic in Riberas, as well as your follow ups...I waited 7 years to have the first one done....it came thru so well, he operated on the 2nd one within 6 weeks....I was back up on my feet, working, 11 days post surgery.

A big third recommendation for Dr. Gonzalez at Maskaras Clinic. Wonderful personality, perfect English and one of the best in his orthopedic field according to a doctor friend of mine from Guad.

I would highly recommend Dr. Arturo Rodriguez. He has an office in Guadalajara. I fractured my ankle four years ago and he fixed it so well that I was able to run a full marathon one year later. He has also done work on several friends' knees, all of whom have been satisfied.

Phones for his office on Justo Sierra 2547 (put 01 before for long distance, and then 33 for Guadalajara if you're calling from lakeside):

36 16 07 07

36 30 01 25

36 30 36 55

If you need help translating, you can call me: (01 33) 3165 5567

Why go to Guadalajara to see an Orthopedic Doctor when one of the best comes here on Friday to Mascaras Clinic, unless you really like driving to Guad, Dr. Jorge Gonzalez Uzur has his office at Mascaras Clinic on Friday (765 4805) and his regular office in Guadaladara on 3432 Tarascos directly across from Del Carmen Hospital. His Cell phone is 045 333 808 7440. He operates at all hospitals including a Clinic called Clinica del Ribera very near Del Carmen Hospital.

You will not find a nicer, qualified Doctor who speaks excellent English, so you don't need a Translator. I had the opportunity to see him yesterday as he operated on my friends Carpel Tunnel at the above Clinic to save money. A really nice, clean Clinic.

Has anyone compared the costs in paying for knee surgery here in Mexico...with follow-up vs having it done in the USA under PLan A and B Medicare in the USA?

I have a great Ortho whom I refer to and is part of my network of Specialists. I oversee the entire process and ensure that you get the needed post-surgical care from the surgeon, PT and any other specialists that may be needed. I believe in treating the whole person, not just the knee.

I know this an old post, but people I assume still go back to it .  First, I would avoid Dr Aceves. He injected stem cells into  both knees and my left knee capsule became infected and severely inflamed.  I have been off my feet for 2 months.snd it is still not not right, at all. I would recommend Dr Armando Rabadan. He is an orthopedic doctor and physical therapist.  He is excellent at diagnostics and will help you avoid surgery if it’s unnecessary.  376 766 17 31

Another vote for Dr. Jorge Gonzalez Ursua who comes to Mascaras Clinic. He did knee surgery on a friend and hip replacements on several friends. I recently went to see him, as I was afraid I needed a hip replacement, since I had lost some bone mass per my latest physical exam. He looked at my scan and told me I did NOT need surgery, prescribed a med and a vitamin, and reviewed my other prescriptions to be sure nothing conflicted. He's a nice friendly guy, too, and speaks perfect English.
