ajijicbound
Does anyone know what animal is making a sort of chirping at night, sort of like a dolphin? Usually in a series of 5 chirps?
bournemouth
We have one in our area too and I'd love to know what it is - I've assumed it is some type of night bird - but who knows?
puro guero
Maybe a gecko ? Check the last few posts on this thread from 2011. "http://www.chapala.com/webboard/index.php?showtopic=30105&page=2" Here's a 6 second recording of their distinctive chirping sound. " "
Joco
It's probably a pygmy owl: http://www.owling.com/Colima_Pygmy.htm
ajijicbound
No, it's not the gecko or pygmy owl. The sound is similar to the pygmy owl but the song descends and does not stay the same pitch. I need to record it and post it to youtube.
Joco
Varieties of owls have different songs. This site has several: http://www.xeno-canto.org/species/Glaucidium-gnoma?view=

puro guero
The Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans) is nocturnal and inhabits the highlands of Jalisco. Here's the sound they make. "http://www.flyingsquirrels.com/Audio/sfs1.wav"
bournemouth
What we are hearing is not the flying squirrel nor the Colima Pygmy Owl.

ajijicbound
Well, I listened to just about all the sounds Most likely an owl. http://www.owlpages.com/sounds.php and I think we're getting close. The closest is the Tropical Screech B. Western Screecj Call B and the Wishkered Screech owl typical. A few pygmy's sounded close. I'll try to record it tonight. bournemouth
I can just hear it and it is what we hear too. As it moves from tree to tree, I'm going with a small owl.

exHawaiian
I think R2D2 has one best possible answer. There are tiny tree frogs which do that type of sound.
