Outdoor motion detector

Cortland

Recommended Posts

I want to install an outdoor wireless motion detector with a siren, and preferably battery operated, to cover the area in front of sliding doors on the terrace.

I need to be able to set the sensitivity so that it is not triggered by a bird or small animal. We already have padlocked bars and door sensors, but these do not stop an intruder using a hacksaw to cut the bars and then breaking the glass in the sliding door. We also have dogs but they haven't prevented two break-ins in the past 6 months.

Does anyone know where I can obtain this either Lakeside or in Guadalajara?

I too wanted a motion detector alarm, but I think we need to import........if you have a local post office box you can receive them from a couple of Chinese retailers that will send things to Mexico.....dealextreme.com for sure and possibly focalprice.com.....and likely more.

in the past I settled for trip alarms which can be had for $50 pesos...........they are door alarms that you need to adapt to trip alarms.

I'm sorry to be of no help down here, but the best is Optex and I know, and have, exactly what you want but I brought it down from NOB. I've always said you need zones, you want to "detect" or announce someone before they get to your house and definitely before they cut, or break in, then it's too late.

The Optex are designed to NOT be set off by small animals, even dogs for the most part. They're not cheap, but they are give a level of security I'm willing to pay for. I've not seen them for sale down here, but possibly SOSE in Chapala might be able to get them.

There are two levels of "security" one is a simple "announcing" sensor like you cross when entering a shop in Tlaquepacque etc. they are non selective and most anything will set them off, Sterens sells them, I have two in a drawer. Or, you can go to a professional, serious level and it costs considerably more, but you get what you pay for. Each residence and the living habits of the owners dictates which works best.

What you are looking for is something like this, but this is only the sensor, you need a "receiver" or alarm system to set off the siren
http://www.homesecuritystore.com/p-278-bx-80nr-optex-outdoor-perimeter-protection-pir.aspx
This one creates a "curtain" across an area near a wall.

Or, one of these
http://www.homesecuritystore.com/p-964-vx-402rec-optexs-outdoor-detection.aspx
Which looks specifically at an area and again sets off a central alarm

This is effective in creating a "line" which when crossed sets off a chime, or could be connected to a central alarm.

Yes, something like the ones on the websites you mentioned. As indicated in my reply to another comment, I went to Steren's but their equipment cannot be calibrated to allow for birds, small animals etc. so they could be constantly giving false alarms.

Also, thanks to the other posts. I will probably get one or more in the States or Canada.

The basic theory of Optex is to send out two "beams" hi and low and you mount the sensor at about 3.5' and to activate the alarm you have to "break" both beams as a person would. I have cats, they might break a lower beam, or a bird might break the upper, but breaking both simultaneously is unlikely unless it's a person. And, there are provisions for tweaking the beams to spread narrow and long, or wide and short depending on the area you are protecting.

That is half the story, but it requires a receiver or central unit and if you want more information pm me and I'll fill in some details.

And, as I said, I have two Sterens units that are basically chimes and one was mounted on the upper deck and when the wind blew the moving palm trees over 60' away set it off, good for a store entry way, but not what is needed here.
