Real aluminum screening?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know where to get aluminum screening, the real stiff metal material not the plastic or other, limper stuff?

The several window/door guys I've used around here all have various types of screening, from the kind you'd have to cut through with pincers to the soft, black type. I'd have to assume any that you choose would, too.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm still looking for aluminum screening since it is what is needed for papermaking.

Our iron worker, Betoweld, redid our screens with galvanised screening. Has held up to the abuse from 3 dogs for the last 5 years and still looks new and doesn't rust.

NOTE:

The OP is not looking for window screens. He is looking for a screen suitable for papermaking projects.

If aluminum cannot be found, he might use heavy steel screen, sold in 4x8 sheets at iron supply places. It can be spray painted to avoid rusting. Various guages are available.

OP clarification: Actually, I am looking for window screening (the aluminum type) because it is what is most likely available for papermaking frames. Ideally, I would like brass 40 gauge screening but feel doubtful about finding that here.

RVGringo, you have intuited another thing I need: a stiff hardware cloth-type material, shouldn't be too heavy, so actual hardware cloth 1/4" or 1/2" would be ideal, if that is available.

To all posters: thanks so much for your suggestions. I haven't actually had a chance to get out and check what has been posted so far but will soon.

Afterword: I'm posting this in case someone else is looking for hardware cloth (malla) and window screening (mosquitero). The hardware store (ferreteria) near the Oxxo and Sunrise restaurant in Riberas has hardware cloth in 1/4" and 1/2", window screen in galvanized steel (quite stiff and strong) and window screen in white plastic (more malleable). Most other ferreterias do not have hardware cloth. The 2 kinds of window screen are more common.
