ALEJANDRO HOPE, a former senior intelligence officer, on law enforcement struggles in Mexico.

In Mexico, a Kidnapping Ignored - Six years into a mostly military assault on drug cartels, impunity across much of Mexico has worsened, and justice is harder to find.

Thanks for posting. For the ostriches who say crime is no worse than the US, a somewhat high crime country, and want to compare silly, non-existent "stats", the article above has many excellent points. One of which is: "Many areas now veer toward lawlessness: in 14 of Mexico’s 31 states, the chance of a crime’s leading to trial and sentencing was less than 1 percent in 2010, according to government figures analyzed by a Mexican research institute known as Cidac. And since then, experts say, attempts at reform have stalled as crime and impunity have become cozy partners".

With Elizabeth's comments below, I agree 100%.

Difficult to read. I feel anger, fear, frustration and sadness simultaneously...

Absolutely. What a hopeless situation it sounds like. So one can only imagine what these poor women are going through, month after month of waiting for the Mexican authorities to take some initiative in dealing with their kidnapped family members. Sad to say, that chances are very high that all are long since dead, as often happens, even when the ransom is paid. But at least knowing would bring closure.
