La Canacinta

It's a street west of Ajijic and since we live there now, we'd like to know what it means. We've asked around and looked in dictionaries without result.

Here's my guess........

If you break the word down to: Cana and Cinta, Cana means sugar cane; and Cinta means ribbon.

I searched and there is a type of sugar cane, called Ribbon Sugar Cane.

I could not confirm that Ribbon Cane is grown in Mexico, but Mexico is a worldwide leader in sugar cane production.

Again, pure entymological conjecture on my part.

Cana means "grey or white hair"

Caña is the word for "cane"

But often the "~" is omitted, especially with capital letters.

My dictionary also shows another definition for "caña" as being a "reed". Maybe since we live by the lake it's being used as reed in this context.
