The calm that was characteristic in the last three decades in the Guadalajara metropolitan area was in part due to a truce between drug cartels and the low profile of law enforcement, but things have changed in recent months seen in recent skirmishes involving drug gangs fighting for control of the plaza.

Given the recent confronations between sicarios of rival groups, the Army mobilized its troops and conducted several operations in which several suspects were arrested for conducting violence, in addition the militaty seized high-powered weapons and drugs. The most notorious incident was when elements of the armed forces stormed the Reclusorio Preventivo de Puente Grande.

So far this year Jalisco has registered more than 129 executions, a lot of them in the last couple of months. The end of last month authorities located yet more bodies many had been mutilated. The state attorney general Tomas Coronado Olmos stated that the number of cases adjudicated so far amounts to 123, compared to 84 recorded during the whole year of 2009.

Jose Nicolas Araujo, chief operating officer of the Municipal Police of Zapopan, is one of the recent victims of violence in the state. He was executed outside his home on May 23. Witnesses told police that Araujo ran out of his house after hearing a truck smash into his car, only to be gunned down when he stepped onto the street. The truck used in the attack was later found abandoned.

Up to press time the state attorney general was conducting the investigations from three lines of communication. It is believed that rampant corruption within various police agencies in the state of Jalisco assisted in the excution of the police chief.

Several officers have talked on condition that their names not be used that the violence in Jalisco increased after the abduction on April 3, 2010 of young Alejandro Coronel, 16, son of Ignacio Nacho Coronel Villarreal, a lieutenant of Joaquin Guzman Loera "El Chapo" at Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit.

The same police sources say that the Sinaloa cartel leader is the main target of Los Zetas, who entered the territory of Jalisco for several months looking to steal control from the grip of the power base held by El Chapo. They say even that the members of the paramilitary group Zetas arrived in Jalisco straight from the northeast border.

The Zetas arrived directly from Ojuelos and Lagos de Moreno all the way to Colotlán, to the north of the state and down to Tequila and Magdalena, in the northwest. They arrived in Puerto Vallarta in the west, passing through Nayarit. It is in this corridor where they have had several confrontations with members of the Pacific cartel, an ally of El Chapo.

On the alleged morning that the son of Nacho Coronel was abducted a commando of more than 30 people arrived at the residence of El Tigre in Bahia de Banderas, a few miles of Vallarta. They took out the regional leader of the Federation of University Students in Guadalajara, Luis Coronado Fernando Gurrola, and dragged him to the turf of the golf course, where he was executed.

Two women who witnessed the event testified before the Public Ministry of Nayarit that the sicarios took two teenagers by force, one of them is alleged to be the son of Nacho Coronel. Until now, no Nayarit authority has confirmed that one of the two boys abducted was in fact Alejandro Coronel.

Three days later in the capital of Nayarit a commando of more than 100 men responded back by abducting 12 people including Jose Luis Estrada Martinez, "El Pepino," and his father. They were alleged to be scarios of Los Zetas.

Shortly after, their bodies were found near the town of San José de Nayarit Castilla, eight of them were completely burned, the other four were scattered in the immediate area and had been shot, this was reported in Boderland Beat;

Los Coronel, a la baja

The academic who is an expert in the region on organize crime, Dante Haro Reyes of the University of Guadalajara, said that while the drug gangs coexisted peacefully for more than three decades in Jalisco, the war that has been unleashed is for control over the plaza.

An expert in security matters, Haro Reyes did not rule out that at this stage of violence between criminal gangs, El Chapo and his followers, including Nacho Coronel, are losing control of the plaza.

In March 2009, for example, a nephew of Nacho Coronel was arrested in Tlajomulco de Zuniga, according to local media reports. It was José Ángel Carrasco Coronel, aka "El Changel," who was arrested along with other armed men

On that occasion prosecutor Coronado Olmos said that "El Changel" and his accomplices were sent to the delegation of the PGR. However, the detainees never made it to the delegation of that institution, as it was reported by El Universal on March 22, 2009. Hours later, all detainees were released after posting bail.

The second week of last January several sicarios were arrested during a clash with the army, they were; JJesús Gutiérrez López, Raymundo Larios Vizcarra, Ernesto Coronel Peña, José Jaime Coronel and Juan Ernesto Coronel Herrera. The last three appeare to be relatives of Nacho Coronel. Also in the fighting between the sicarios and military forces Avelino Quiñones was killed, a friend of Nacho Coronel.

On the 18th of the same month, the PGR reported capturing Gael Carbel Aldana, the principal operator working for Nacho Coronel in the towns of Chapala, La Barca and Mazamitla in Jalisco. Also detained was Oscar Nava Valencia, El Lobo Valencia. The two had confronted a military contingent in Tlajomulco de Zuniga that resulted in their capture. Carbel and Nava are in the prison Cefereso 3 of Matamoros, Tamaulipas.

The situation of the lieutenant of El Chapo in Jalisco could be more serious if the version could be confirmed that he was detained some time on May 13 during the simultaneous executions of several search warrants at different residences in the sub-division of Bugambilias in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, and also in El Molino, in the municipality of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, in Jalisco.

Crime Wave Moving South Arriving at Jalisco

Recently we have seen a surge of violence in Jalisco as Los Zetas attempt to enter the territory guarded by the powerful Sinaloa cartel.

The one on the left in the white hat is Manuel Torres Felix known as "El M1" or "El Ondeado," he is one of the mid level leaders in the Sinaloa Cartel and one who has been tied to some of the recent violence from Chihuhua to Jalisco.

Manuel is brother of Javier Torres Felix (El JT), a close associate of the cartel lider Joaquín Guzmán; Javier was arrested and extradited to the U.S. in December 2006.

Manuel's son, Anastacio, also known as "Tachio" or "El 4", was killed by rivals from the Beltran-Leyva Cartel. It was after this death that Manuel Torres Felix acquired his other nickname "El 14" as a tribute to his sons death. His nickname " El Ondeado" was given to him by deceased drug kingpin Arturo Beltran Leyva, who ordered the murder of his son Atanacio. This then led on to more confrontations between the cartels.

Evidence of the Zeta presence in Jalisco has come from recent violence from both rival cartels and the captured of several members armed to the teeth. With rocket launchers and armed better than the soldiers in the Iraq war, eleven heavily armed commandos of the Sinaloa cartel were arrested on June 8, 2010 in the municipality of Tototlán.

The sicarios claimed to belong to the Sinaloa cartel and were involved in traffic of drugs in the Cienega de Jalisco region. These sicarios were disguised as policemen and were in possession bulletproof vests, four fragmentation grenades and black police uniforms.

First thing you notice is the black clothes of some of the sicarios, they were probably wearing military or police type uniforms. Second is the person in yellow facing his back toward the media who the authorities are probably attempting to protect his identity and possibly a collaborator.

The arsenal seized consisted of a dangerous and deadly weapons typically used in the artillery of the armies of the world, such as a rocket launcher used to go through the armor of tanks, bazooka used to launch fragmentation grenades, five AK-47 rifles known as "cuernos de chivo" and five handguns of calibers ranging from .380, .45 and 9 mm.

They also had in their possession an amount of 250 kilos of synthetic drug known as crystal, methamphetamine and 32 kilograms of marijuana, along with six vehicles; three SUV's being new models, one luxury car and two compact cars.

This is an example of the welcome wagon for the Zetas who are attempting to enter the region of Jalisco controlled by the powerful Sinaloa cartel.

Seems like we now have an ongoing bloodbath! What happens when/if someone wins? Seems to me that Mexico is really going to fall into the category of "Failed State" if it already hadn't. If I were head of an international company that wanted to build additional manufacturing capacity - Mexico would not be on that list. And if I already had a presence, I would be seriously be evaluating options to move to another country. I love this country and its people - but not the minority that appears to be on its way to taking control with its murderous rampage.

Mad Max businesses are avoiding Mexico as you see more small cars and their components being assigned to the US and Canada including VW which had a huge presence here.

Sounds like a country at war to me. This is beyond Ireland in its worse days and worse than Iraq today. Total impunity and lawlessness is happening daily. If this was in the US or Canada there would be millions marching in protest. Sure glad not trying to sell property or dependent on a business in Mexico as this is only dramatically getting worse by the week and the values of real estate may soon follow BP stock. It seems the deniers have gone quiet. mmmm

Sadly, millions of Mexicans are affected and the government has little control other than when allowed by the corrupt and criminals.

Sadly I agree. Envision what would happen if you took one of the recent days in Mexico - and interposed the killings and slaughter over a similarily populated area of the US or Canada.

Actually, the auto business is still coming to Mexico, rather than the US, because of lower labor costs.
