Maseca and (Non-) GMO tortillas in Mexico

Reading the label on a pack of Maseca flour will not tell you anything about the corn/maiz that they have used.

Writing or calling to Maseca will not get you any answers.

The answers that Greenpeace Mexico finally were able to get do not surprise; Maseca is made with GMO-corn.

Any suggestions where we can purchase here at the Lakeside Tortillas that are guaranteed made of non-GMO maiz?

asking for Non-GMO dried soy beans is asking too much I think...............

Ask at your neighborhood tortillería whether their tortillas are made of Maseca or nixtamal. Usually tortillas made of nixtamal are made of non-GMO corn.

I no longer live at Lake Chapala and frankly can't think of a single tortillería in Ajijic that actually uses freshly ground nixtamal rather than Maseca. You might have better luck in Chapala; try at the Mercado Municipal. Here in Morelia, there are still a few places where nixtamal is prepared and ground for freshly-made tortillas.

IMHO, Monsanto is the devil incarnate.

The introduction to Mexico of GMO corn will, sooner rather than later, eliminate the production of centuries-old--nay, millenia old--varieties of corn in Mexico. This is an ecological, agricultural, physiological, biological, historical, and gastronomical disaster. Just google it for more information.

GMO foods are dangerous to our health. the europeans and russians will not allow them to be sold there. the russians did some research about american usage and found 2 million deaths a year in the usa due to GMo foods. the most interesting had to do with the distruction of lung tissue that lead to pneumonia. animal studies indicate intestinal death. monsanto used government officals such as rumfield to bypass the usual regulatory process and monsanto's senior executives go from industry to government and back. monsanto makes users sign papers saying that they will not do any research on the seed or humans/animals using it. there are many good videos on the internet, so just google "GMO dangers" and you will be very surprised at what they are trying to sneak past us all.

you can get tortillas made from whole corn ground on the premisis in ajijic at the tortillaria just off guadalupe victoria and galeana .thanks for the heads up about maseca.
