How to clean a hard-drive

Then there's probably corruption in your Internet Explorer. Or perhaps in the installation of Flash. And I repeat that running Flash in a browser should have no effect on your computer overall.

There have been issues with the Flash addon in all browsers, not only IE. If you uninstall Flash and the problem goes away you can then go to the Adboe site and re-install. Sometimes updates don't install properly or other addons affect Flash. Once uninstalled and re-installed the problem of CPU consumption meaning the computer is running slow, disappears. I did that on my XP laptop and all is running just fine with IE8. I never had any problem with IE8 and Flash on my Vista machine.

Again, if your computer is sluggish, run task manager and sort by CPU percentage. If the browser is eating lots of CPU it's probably due to an addon like Flash.

John, thanks for the clarification. I recall now that, some weeks ago, there was a problem with Flash, but it had to do with security issues, an ongoing problem with Adobe programs, and not CPU consumption. However, you are correct, this kind of problem has occurred from time-to-time in Windows.

I'd try these two registry cleaners - CCleaner (affectionaly know as Crap Cleaner) and Glary Utilities at these websites:

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

http://www.glaryutilities.com/builds.html

Also try this free spyware remover as well - SUPERAntispyware - follow this link:

http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

These are really great utilities - and all of them are free

After that - I would defrag my system.

I've used defraggers and registry cleaners for over 15 years and never suffered ill effects ... but I've also never noticed any great improvment after using

Sparks, that's interesting. As I pointed out, not everyone will suffer all the time, but the percentage is good. Since you didn't, but nothing has changed, then... ?
