slumdog
I've searched the Web in vain for pricing of long-distance calls using prepaid cards for TelCel cellular. There's a ton of information at telcel.com, but my Spanish isn't good enough to discover what I'm looking for. Does anyone have this information, or know of a TelCel tienda where a staffer might speak English?

En el caso de algunas ciudades Fronterizas, la tasa de IVA que se aplicará es del 11%. So you can register 3 numbers for free calls, the first 5 minutes are free if you recharge 150 per month. Other calls are 4.16 pesos a minute
Bisbee Gal
We have found this person to be very helpful in explaining the ins and outs of TelCel with us, in English. Her office is on the carretera a block or so west of El Torito, same side. You can phone her, but better to stop in. slumdog
Thanks, BisbeeGal: I'll go see her... what does she actually do for a living, though, dispense cell phone advice? Intercase: thanks, and I'm happy to say I know that basic info. What I'm looking for is long-distance rates. I have a friend who calls on his U.S. phone, whether he's in California or down the street in Ajijic, and that sucks 50 pesos a minute off my balance... yet incoming calls are free on TelCel. Obviously, that doesn't apply all the time, and I'd like to know where TelCel posts this information, so we ALL can find out what it costs to call, say, Merida, or receive a call from Manzanillo. Calling from a 331 or 333 number here in Ajijic to, say, Guadalajara, or even next door is actually "long distance" as far as TelCel is concerned, and I'd like to know what the boundaries are. This is a company that is pretty much a monopoly, and while they have us in their grip, they don't seem too concerned if we understand those rates or not. Sure, they advertise all kinds of plans, but they're convoluted and many of them involve the use of credit cards, as opposed to payasyougo cards. Perhaps someone who uses TelCel and pays on credit actually gets a statement, and we can find out that way.
cosalamx
I would say that Telcel's attitude is, "If you are concerned with the cost, you shouldn't use the service." With pay as you go, unless you use a stopwatch you have to rely on Telcel.
Intercasa
I had gone to the Telcel web site to check the rates for this posting and saw that their bonus credit is only good for calling / texting other Telcel phones. Movistar bonus credit can be used to call or text any phone and certain weekends can be used to call the US & Canada.

johanson
I got some rates today for TelCel: - Telcel to Telcel calls: $4.16 pesos (other than your three registered Amigos and 9 "favorites") - Telcel to landline: $6.89 - Telcel to other Mexican cellular services: $6.89 - Telcel to USA/Canada: $14.91 - Telcel to Central America: $17.70 - Local texts: .88 - National texts: $1.79 - World texts: $18.49 How much do you pay? I have had the Amigo plan for more than a year and pay a fraction of what is posted above per minute Amigo Fidelidad: Amigo premia tu Fidelidad y al cumplir un año con tu línea celular en Sistema Amigo puedes llamar a cualquier Telcel local por sólo $1.19 el minuto. Once you've registered your phone after a year, you can pay as much as $1.19 pesos per minute for a local call. I don't pay that much per minute because I can buy say $500 pesos of time and receive, depending upon the time of year either usually $900 pesos of time or $950 pesos of time. Or as little as $63 centavos per minute. I don't always buy such a large amount of time. Usually I average about 80 centavos per minute for a local telcel to telcel call. But as Spencer has pointed out those extra points or pesos only work when calling another telcel phone. Movie Star has much better rates. Now if I could only get all of my friends to use Movie Star. Sadly I haven't checked the long distance rates because any time I call long distance in Mexico I do it for free because of my Telmex plan and any time I phone out of country I use VoIP which costs me about 2 cents per minute. Check out Skype. I know persons who still have dialup who can use Skype, because Skype's compression is so good.
slumdog
Actually I don't really know how much I pay (with one exception: I do know that when my friend in California calls me on his ATT&T cell, it costs me 50 pesos per minute). I figured these costs, which I got off the billboard at the TelCel store in the plaza beside the casino in Ajijic, were new, because when I originally set up my phone, the rates where pretty much as you say. I'll have to check my balance, make a call, then check my balance again; sadly, even using text messaging to check the balance costs!

johanson
With telcel, just dial *133# and wait the message to pop up on your screen. It costs less than phoning *333. I think I pay 40 or so centivos instead of up to 1.19 pesos per minute when I dial the *333 number and listen to a voice message.
