we are planning a trip to Colima and Nevado de Colima national park. Any suggestions on what to see and where to stay...campground or hotel would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance to all the knowledgeable posters on this forumn.

I am knowledgeable as I have family living in Colima and have visited several times. My advice-don't waste your time. Nevado yes,the town don't bother. Comala is cute.

We recently (late January) visited Colima and stayed at Hotel Ceballos, which sits right on the main plaza and was a very nice place ($81/night USD not including taxes). Our friend stayed at the Hotel Merced on Plaza Juarez. A bit more rustic but still very comfortable and about 1/2 as expensive. Both places have off street parking, a definite consideration on our part. There are other hotels you can find on the internet, including some hostels in the $10-20/night range. All depends on what you are looking for. We wanted centrality, some style, parking, and a good staff. Ceballos had all that and more. Only thing we didn't care for was the food in their sidewalk restaurant which we found uninspired and overpriced. But there are plenty of good restaurants around the plaza and around town.

I keep a photojournal blog of our adventures around Mexico. Here is the series I am doing on Colima (3 completed, 2 more coming): Colonial City of Colima

It should give you a start on what to see and do. Colima is a great little city, very clean, modern, prosperous, and with a great climate this time of year (but pretty hot and humid in the summer). ¡Buena suerte!

By the way, a group of us climbed Nevado de Colima a year ago last November. Here is the entry to my blog for that adventure: Climbing Nevado de Colima

If you do visit the area, be sure to dress warmly. Even driving in, you'll be at 11,000-12,000 feet in the dead of winter. And make sure you go in a 4x4 with high clearance and be VERY CAREFUL. A carload of visitors recently tumbled off the road and all six were killed. A word to the wise...

I'd suggest a place like Laguna la María for camping. They're setup for RV, tent camping ... or cabins. They are beyond Comala and Suchitlan. Lots of stuff to see in the area; birding, mask making, old sugar mill and museum in Nogueras and la Zona Magica.
