  1. Come join the fun at an exciting new class beginning at Hammer School of Carpentry. Adult men & women woodworking classes will begin September 9. Act now because classes are limited to just 6 students. Two different levels will be offered. Beginners will attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 until 9:30 a.m. Intermediates attend on Mondays and Wednesdays also from 8 until 9:30 a.m. Sessions last 8 weeks and cost 250 pesos per 1.5 hr. class which includes instruction, the use of all tools and materials. Proceeds from the adult classes help to provide scholarships for Mexican children to learn a life skill in either carpentry or carving at Hammer. The workshop classroom contains high-quality machinery including bandsaws, table saws, lathes, sanders, jointers, planers, drill presses and more. Projects created in the workshop can either be taken home or donated to the bazaar next door to benefit the children’s programs. Hammer is also seeking experienced woodworkers needed to volunteer to help with classes. Adobe Studio January 2016 Classes Fiber Arts Fundamentals—Spinning, Dyeing and Weaving 4 Mondays, January 11, 18, 25, February 1, 11am - 3pm Instructor: Brad Mowers (30 years experience in all fiber techniques; working artist and instructor 700p (instruction and materials) In this class you will get your hands on the essentials of the fiber arts. You will start working with wool fiber with a Mayan paddle spinner and spin the fiber into yarn. On the second day we will fire up natural dyes in primary colors – marigold for yellow, cochineal for red, and indigo for blue – and give your yarn brilliant coloration. On the two final days you will weave the yarn into your own constructions and patterns to take home. Raku Pottery Class 3 Tuesdays, January 12, 19, 26, 10am – 1pm. Joe Smith, instructor (40 years teaching experience) 850p (includes instruction, materials, glazes and firing) Raku is a six-hundred year-old Japanese tradition of firing pottery by loading pots into a hot kiln and 20 minutes later unloading the glowing hot pots and reloading with more pots. We will add the Western process of placing the red hot pots in combustible materials to bring out metallic sheens in the glazes. Students will have hands-on experience in all steps of the process. Hand-building and wheel-throwing will be taught in the class. No previous experience is necessary. Advanced students are welcome. Formed Paper Sculpture 3 Thursdays, January 7, 14, 21, 10 -1pm. Instructor, Jan Steinbright (40 years experience as working artist and teacher) 600p (instruction and materials) This class will cover the techniques of working with paper on wire as a sculptural medium. Students will make containers (baskets, bowls), masks, free standing figures and much more. Each class requires 100p deposit to reserve place. Class size is limited so register early. In this class, we will be working at all levels of experience. Beginners will learn the basic basketry techniques using natural materials gathered from the Chapala area (reeds, vines, bark).Others may wish to continue with projects already begun or learn a new technique or experiment with man-made materials such as yarn and other fibers. Jan Steinbright is the instructor. She has had over forty years experience in fiber arts and sculpture, is a teacher and a working artist. Adobe Studio January Classes Basic Papermaking Wednesdays, January 14 and 21, 11am - 2 pm $450p instruction and materials This two-afternoon workshop will cover how to make paper from discarded paper scraps and local plants like banana leaves, tule and grasses, flowers and leaves. You will be crafting your own paper. We will make boxes, bookmarks and other items. Bookmaking Wednesdays: January 28, February 4, February 11, 11am - 2 pm $450p instruction and materials This three-afternoon workshop follows on from the Basic Papermaking workshop. This workshop will cover the making of 2 kinds of books, sewn and codice (or accordion). You will be making both the inside papers and the covers for your books. We will make both decorative papers and writing papers for the insides. You must have taken the Basic Papermaking workshop as a prelude to this class. Instructor: Brad Mowers. Brad is a fiber craftsman with 30 years experience and has been making his own paper and teaching the craft to children and adults for several years. Basketry Thursdays, January 15, 22, 29- 11– 2 pm. $450 instruction and materials This class is for beginners and also for the more advanced. Beginners will be introduced to basketry using local natural materials gathered at Lakeside. The more advanced students will continue on already-begun projects or pick up a new technique and or materials, both natural and man-made. Adobe Studio Clay and Basketry Classes for February Clay Class, Feb 14 – March 14, 2014, Fridays 10- noon 600p instruction; 200p materials fee: 800p total (instruction,10# clay, firing, misc materials) 300p deposit upon registration to hold your place in class. This class will cover the basics of hand building in clay and explore alternative techniques of firing and experimentation in natural coloring. Small class size will allow for beginners as well as those who have already had experience in clay to participate. The instructor is Steve Weckel who has had 14 years experience in working with clay, having explored many alternative techniques for firing and colorants.   11. Basketry Classes at Adobe Studio, Chapala We are going into our second round of basketry classes beginning October 9. These classes have been so much fun with enthusiastic students, a gathering trip into the country and a variety of basketry expressions coming out of the class. October 9 – 30. Basic basketry with local materials, vines and reeds. Tuesdays 10 – noon. Cost $350 plus materials fee of $50 p. October 10 – 31. Gourd Baskets. Wednesdays 10 –noon.
