  1. Well I used to have a still in an unnamed Middle Eastern country... I may even have the "Blue Flame" insruction booklet which the company gave out to expats back then. You need 100# of sugar, yeast, and water to get the mash started. Wine I do indeed remember - white, red and rose. And we do have those 5 gal garrafons on hand but I vowed never to make it again...!
  2. The Lake Chapala Society Bulletin VI April 11, 2020 We send our best thoughts and wishes to our members, volunteers, members of the Mexican Community and all our friends here at Lakeside. We continue to go through these difficult times. We are hopeful the information below is of value to you. We know some people like lots of information and some prefer to see less. Please feel free to read in detail, or skim or just click on links that might be of value to you. There continues to be many rumors running through the community and especially on social media – and unfortunately some of these are not true and create alarm and added stress for people. We encourage everyone to only share information you find from a reliable source. The links at the bottom of this Bulletin represent several official sites that you may find helpful. The most important message of all right now is to - Stay at Home! Campus remains closed – government entities are strongly endorsing a Stay At Home policy that will continue until at least the end of April. In the last week of the month they will make announcements concerning next steps. Our Board of Directors have been meeting frequently to discuss the operations of The Lake Chapala Society. We are in agreement the campus will remain closed through April 30 at a minimum. We will monitor recommendations and make further announcements as we go. We do feel that we need to be even more cautious than the general government guidelines since our membership is largely made up of people in the higher risk categories of seniors and those with various pre-existing conditions. We may be fortunate, in that as some believe, we got an early start on the Stay At Home efforts, but the virus will still be impacting our area. If the Stay At Home initiatives have helped to slow the curve, it has been well worth it. We ask everyone to hang in there and work with us through this process. Once it is safe to open, there are a few things we will be doing. We will remain closed an extra week, to allow time for us to scrub down the campus and get things in place to protect those who join us. Board Members along with the Executive Director and management team are reviewing our activity guidelines to determine group size and room use standards. We are also developing guidelines for health and safety precautions on campus. There will be a new normal way of life for us all. We take on our roles responsibly and want to do our very best to safeguard our supporters. Sorry to repeat this, but as we hear from the streets of Lakeside, too many foreigners are not practicing the recommended safeguards to beat COVID-19. Please remember there are many things each of us can do on our own to keep ourselves, our families, and friends healthy: Stay at home! during the outbreak; When you must go out, avoid crowds and confined spaces, safely wear a mask and gloves; Wash your hands often and disinfect frequently touched services; Avoid close contact (6 feet, or about two arm lengths) with people who are sick; Eat healthy foods, get plenty of sleep, and avoid smoking, drugs and alcohol; Stay connected with family and friends by phone, social media, or video chat Give yourself time to be active, get outdoors in your garden, and do things you enjoy, safely walk your pet; Make sure you have enough of your medicines, household supplies and groceries; If you are going out for groceries, buy a little more to decrease numbers of trips, while out, get your gas tank filled, make any needed ATM withdrawals on the same trip; Avoid all non-essential travel. Masks - Click on this link for a YouTube video from Dr Sanja Gupta on making and wearing a mask. Reaching Out to LCS Members and the Community at Large! In response to COVID-19, the Lake Chapala Society has turned its attention to the health and safety of its members and the community at large. We have created two new programs; 1. Determine who is currently here, Lakeside. 2. Determine if people here are OK. Survey #1. REACHING OUT—Where Are You? While we care for all of our members, whether they are here at Lakeside or outside the area, we need to focus our immediate attention on members who are here at Lakeside, whether they are here full time or here because they cannot leave due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. If you have not already completed this "Where Are You" form, please click here, to complete and submit this survey. Survey #2. REACHING OUT—Are You Okay? This initiative is designed to contact both LCS members and the community at large who are here at Lakeside, particularly those who are living alone or have no family in the area to reach out to them each day to see if they are Okay. We currently have over two dozen Reaching Out Companions who are being contacted daily. If you want to be included in this program, please click here, to complete and submit this survey.t One of our 87 Reaching Out Volunteers are ready to start contacting you. If you have already submitted one of these surveys, thank you and please share this program with friends. 9. Message for U.S. Citizens: U.S. Embassy Mexico City (March 21, 2020) Location: Mexico Event: Joint Statement on U.S.-Mexico Joint Initiative to Combat the COVID-19 Pandemic The United States and Mexico agree on the need for a dedicated joint effort to prevent spread of the COVID-19 virus and address the economic effects resulting from reduced mobility along our shared border. The U.S. and Mexican governments further recognize critical services such as food, fuel, healthcare, and life-saving medicines must reach people on both sides of the border every day. Essential travel must therefore continue unimpeded during this time. In order to ensure that essential travel can continue, the United States and Mexico are also temporarily restricting all non-essential travel across its borders. They will remain in effect through 11:59 pm on April 20, 2020. This decision has been coordinated with the Governments of Mexico and Canada. 12. Dear Members and Friends, Yesterday, your Board of Directors came together to address next steps as it relates to CORONAVIRUS. Rather than planning for the largest AGM in our history and to look forward to extending the legacy of LCS and celebrating these past 65 years, we decided on the heart wrenching but necessary steps to do the right thing to safeguard the health and safety of our members, volunteers and the community at large. And as a result, made the following decisions: The Lake Chapala Society Annual General Meeting that was scheduled to take place on Thursday, March 19, 2020 will be postponed to a later date.  To postpone programs and events that have attracted so many loyal members and the community at-large over the years. This includes the LCS Blues Festival scheduled for Saturday, March 21st and the Fashion Show that was scheduled to take place in April.  To temporarily suspend programs, activities, events and services, including our libraries until the level of contact with others is safer. This includes those offered at the Wilkes Center.  We ask our volunteers who would have face-to-face interactions with our constituents to stay at home until we feel that full activities can be placed back on track. However, the grounds of the Lake Chapala Society will remain open, so that individuals can walk the grounds, enjoy the gardens and have access to the Internet to stay in touch with family, friends and current events.  In addition, we will retain our staff to maintain our buildings and grounds, keep the information desk and office open along with all the other behind the scenes operations so we can resume programs, services and events when conditions are ready. These actions are designed to reduce the threat of spreading of this disease, while keeping the Lake Chapala Society’s doors open to the community during these times to help assist those that may be in need. We want to assure you that the legacy of ‘people helping people’ is not lost during these critical times. We are your community and we are here for you! And while many of our members are returning to their native countries, many more are here year around, along with so many in the Mexican community that rely on LCS as a connection with the foreign community. We need your continued support of LCS through both your membership and generous donations. Keeping all this in mind you will be able to stay connected by renewing your membership online and you will receive a credit towards future classes for trips and events that have been postponed, or you can use the same tickets when these programs are rescheduled, please hold on to your receipts or tickets. Any donations to assist us with continuing our mission at Lake Chapala Society and allowing our staff to maintain the grounds would be greatly appreciated. It is very important to keep the Lake Chapala Society’s doors in the community open in these times to help those that may be in need or require assistance. We are your community and we are here for you! Warm regards, Carole Wolff President

  20. NEVER say NEVER - Merrill Lynch would prefer the U.S. consulate to avoid any possible problems with your documents which might involve members of your family or others in the U.S. SO I so smartly took my documents to the U.S. with me and in Nevada a notary can witness and notarize your documents - which she did. Well my address is in Illinois who does not allow same signature notary for witness/notary. Little did I know. Learned my lesson - no matter how impressive the notario's seal, it's not worth the chance - depending your what you need the signature for. And I have indeed known of others with similar problems...
  21. The U.S. Consulate does not have a Social Security representative when they visit lakeside. You can call the consulate in Guadalajara or email fbu.guadalajara@ssa.gov You'll receive an automated reply and they will respond in several days.
