She has a Bachelor of Education, taught in a public school and community college in Canada, and managed a training department in the Head Office of a major bank. At Lakeside she has taught English at Instituto Loyola and the International School. She has volunteered with LCS for several years.  Barbara is happy to share her experiences of learning to live at Lakeside … and avoid some bumps in the road!

    Description

     

    This three-session class is designed for individuals without any Spanish language background. The instructor will introduce learners to the Spanish pronunciation, some vocabulary, and social protocols. The instructor will give the material in class.

     

    About our instructor

     

    Inez has a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Literature (BA) and a master’s and Doctorate in Adult and Continuing Education.

     

    She worked for the private sector and the US Government to design and evaluate training and education programs.

     

    She taught English in both Spain and Ostería.

     

    She has been managing the ESL program for LCS for several years as well as teaching Introduction to Spanish to our English-speaking members.

    Cultural shock is a normal part of life when we move to another country whose habits are different, we must observe and learn the local rules of urbanity, what body language issues are appropriate, and which are not.

     

    Why the behavior of the inhabitants of the new place is different?

    What do local people expect from me as a unique inhabitant of the area?

    What phrases should I use and at what times?

    What should I understand about the time structure of the local people so different from mine?

     

    We will share with you more about the Mexicans' mindset throughout history to understand why we are as we do in our present. In addition to other data that has been asked over time that can answer many questions about things that happen so commonly.

     

    We intend to help you understand these essential questions for real and adequate coexistence with your new neighbors.

     

    Another way to know Mexico.

     

    You will be given a handout so you can make specific notes during the class.

    General information on the regions in Mexico.

    How the language shows part of the ideology and logic of Mexicans.

    Why Mexicans don’t say “no” and how to live with it.

    LCS trips provide cultural, educational, recreational, and convenient experiences.

    We will be on a bus with plenty of room for your shopping and to travel in comfort.

    We have limited seats. The bus is air-conditioned and has a bathroom.

    Consider that transportation may change from a bus to a van if the number of people is less than expected.

    The Bus will depart promptly at 10:00 am from the sculpture in La Floresta.

     

    The last date to register is Jan 12 at 1:30 pm. You can register at the office or online.

    The Spanish sowed the seeds of Mexico's independence movement from Spain almost immediately after their conquest of the Aztecs. Join us as we explore the ideologies and tactics of the Mexican independence movement.

     

    About our instructor.

    Ted Rogers (P.h. D.) is an energetic and enthusiastic instructor. Holding a triple concentration Ph.D. in history from the University of Colorado, Ted also earned that university’s top teaching award. He has been Visiting Scholar at the London School of Economics, Lambeth Palace, and the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. His travels to over fifty countries, having lived in four of them, give him a unique perspective, which further informs his teaching.

    He is published in three countries. Ted is a permanent resident of Ajijic, where he lives with his beautiful wife, Glenda, and their three crazy dogs.

    WRITE YOUR MEMOIRS FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS & THE WORLD

    Get started writing your memoirs. Share your knowledge and wisdom by writing about your exciting life here in Mexico, your travels, your children and grandchildren, and any other personal topic of interest to you. Create your legacy through the story of your life through this series of four sessions that bring together a small group of new authors. You will learn in a fun, relaxed, and supportive atmosphere (no negative critiquing allowed); learn the discipline to write on a regular basis in order to finish your memoir and discover tips professionals use to get started and keep writing in the face of writer's block or lack of inspiration.

     

    Please reserve your place in advance and bring writing implements (a laptop computer or pen and paper).

    Doris Gallan is a creative writing teacher, coach, and author.

    Doris has helped six new authors write their books and get published. She has traveled around the world—7 continents (including Antarctica!) and 58 countries. She has taught business courses at a university in Viet Nam, creative writing classes in Ecuador and Mexico, and online English as a Foreign Language to students around the world.

    Doris published “The Boomers’ Guide to Going Abroad” (2011, updated edition in 2019, online only). She is working on a humor-filled memoir reminiscing about her life as a vagabond as well as a novel set in 1840s Argentina. Her memoir-writing workshops and classes combine learning with fun and provide students with abundant opportunities to start writing their stories through in-class exercises.

    WHAT’S YOUR STORY?

    Share your stirring stories about your travels, your move to Mexico, your family, your career/work, and your hobbies. Write your legacy in the form of memoirs to pass on your stories to your family, friends, and—if you wish—the world. You will start writing your memoir in this two-hour workshop that will show you where to start your story (usually not at the beginning!); how to write a brief outline to figure out the best order of your stories; learn discipline in writing to ensure you’ll finish your book; and pick up many tips on finding inspiration, getting organized, and overcoming some of the challenges of writing. Author, teacher, and writing coach Doris Gallan provides a safe and creative space to write your stories through fun exercises completed during this two-hour workshop.

  16. U.S. NOTARIZATIONS

    Charles (“Chuck”) D. Wilder, Esq., who is an LCS member and a Board Certified Florida attorney, is also what is known as a Civil-law Notary.  This allows him to notarize documents here in Mexico that are valid for recording, filing or other notarization purposes back in the U.S.  He will be here an available on the LCS campus from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, December 12, 2022 to assist members with notarizing documents for the nominal fees of $50 for the first document and $35 for each additional document.  Chuck will accept US currency or equivalent cash in pesos.

     

    [Please note a requirement of the Civil-law Notary commission under Florida law is that he keep a copy of each document he notarizes in his protocol.  You will be required to make a copy in the LCS office of each document to provide him for his protocol at your expense.]
