BACK STORY: The 39th annual production of the Ajijic Passion Play (Pasión de Cristo) will take place over the last week of this month, with episodes programmed on four dates. The program opens with Jesus and the Disciples joining the Palm Sunday procession (March 25), continuing with dramatic sequences presented on the evening of Maundy Thursday (March 29), the judgments against Jesus by Pontius Pilate and King Herod, followed by the march to Calvary, Crucifixion and burial on Good Friday (March 30) and a Resurrection scene during the Easter Vigil service (March 31). Newcomers not familiar with the local Easter pageant will be impressed by the performances by the large cast of amateur actors, their authentic period costumes fashioned by local seamstresses, stunning scenery and props crafted by a pool of carpenters, artists and stage hands and the heart-moving drama of it all. It is a monumental undertaking that involves the entire community guided by a loose-knit lay group that works independently but in cooperation with the local church. Substantial production costs are shouldered by many local businesses and individuals who chip in cash or materials, as well as people like you who attend fund-raising events such as the art auction-luncheon and the old-fashioned Verbena town fair held on Palm Sunday at the plaza. And by the way, expats are welcome to sign up for bit parts in the Good Friday crowd scenes.

  6. Nobody has mentioned the annual Expo Ganadera (stock show) going on in Guadalajara through Nov. 2, where you will probably find a good selection of barnyard birds for sale. Event is held at the Union Ganadera fairgrounds at the Glorieta Alamo, Tlaquepaque, on your right just after crossing the Lazaro Cardenas overpass as you head into the city from Chapala.
  7. In case anyone's interested, Jocotepec's brand new community hospital is equipped with a 3-D Selenia Dimensions mammography system. Can't attest to staff qualifications for diagnostics. Health services are reportedly provided at no charge to people enrolled in Seguro Popular, and reasonable standard rates to everyone else.
